Not really meaning for this to sound as arrogant as it’s going to, but… Lemmy is almost entirely populated by nerds so far.
Nerds tend to be open to tech, maybe a little smarter overall. You know? You can tell by the grammar, the spelling. It’s a different group here.
Reality is left leaning, and the stupider someone is, in general, the more likely they are to lean right politically. The rest of the right are the really rich, who tend to be up the psychological spectrum toward sociopathic, so of course they would have no time for caring for others’ needs.
Maybe it’s just because there’s less content on Lemmy as of right now, but I remember doomscrolling Reddit, but now I only briefly open Lemmy once or twice a day....
Oddly enough, people are pretty adamant about demanding that we add a lot of addictive features into lemmy, just because they exist on reddit and on other big tech platforms. I usually push back, but I’m always downvoted to oblivion. I conciously wanted to avoid putting these addictive, psychologically harmful things into lemmy-ui.
So its great to see posts like this one. Social media doesn’t have to be a negative experience, or addictive. The time we spend here should be short, and positive.
I don’t want to get too political in shower thoughts, but this would solve a lot of the hot button issues if more people just had safer and supportive environments to escape to and volunteers / paid professionals to help them on the other end.
Maybe not quite what OP was imagining, but I was less focused on the extraction itself and more the destination: a network of safe, private residences you could flee to, then stay at until you've found a job and are ready to move into normal housing. Even better if they have psychological professionals on hand to help you deal with your trauma-- or hell, even staffers who'll help you get in touch with psychological professionals and other resources to help you get back on your feet would be a big plus.
As for the "extraction" itself, yeah, just going in guns blazing wouldn't work. It'd probably have to vary from client to client. Could be something as simple as venmoing you money for an uber. Or maybe you could work together with the staffers on some kind of skullduggery scheme-- like you say you're going out "grocery shopping", then there's a car waiting for you in the grocery store parking lot to take you to the shelters.
Honestly, even just having a friendly voice on the other side of the phone helping you figure out a plan to get out would be a huge help.

In Nebraska, The 12-week ban includes exceptions for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother. This might indicate it was more of a socio-economic / psychological reason, which are not sufficient grounds under the law to terminate the offspring after that point.

I hate the idea that we have different kinds of prisons for different classes of people. In my opinion any kind of tax fraud or financial cheating on the public is a worse crime than most of the ones we currently punish with years of regular prison, except those causing physical / psychological harm to others.
It’s weird how people are fine paying for Netflix, Hulu, CrunchyRoll, Twitch, etc, but draw the line at YouTube, the platform that has infinite more content and actual value.
I see your point, but I think there’s a psychological reasoning behind this.
YouTube in its early days ONLY had a free option whereas services like Netfix have always only had a paid option.
YouTube in its early days certainly had a ton of ads, but they were non-obtrusive. Things like banner ads and ads on the side of the video. Then slowly, they added in-video ads. Iirc it started out only as a single pre-roll ad, but in its current form it has devolved into multiple pre-roll ads and an ungodly amount of imcredibly jarring and obtrusive mid-roll ads that violently break up the content you are consuming. YouTube then has the gall to say that if you want to consume the platform how you used to, you have to shell out money. YouTube hasn’t added anything with its subscription service. Instead it wants you to pay them money to return the service to the usability it had prior.
Discord Nitro has a subscription feature that ads something. They didn’t take away say, the ability to voice chat, and lock a feature it used to have for free behind a paywall.
We can also examine Spotify with this. Unlike YouTube, Spotify has always had both a free tier and a paid tier. The free tier has between song ads and the paid tier has always had no ads. It’s less jarring to have to pay for something if it has always been there. Imagine also if Spotify started putting ads in the middle of a fucking song and forced you to pay to remove them even though there never used to be ads in the middle of a song.
Tl;Dr - A twofold issue. 1. YouTube sort of shot itself in the foot in a way by not starting out with a paid tier. 2. YouTube did not really ad anything with premium, but instead is making you pay to use the service as you used to be able to for free. Obtrusive in-video ads are cancer and one of the worst types of ads.
Look, I get that you think your logic is sound and that you don’t like being called pro-slavery. I guess in your head “saving a baby” cannot equate to “enslaving women”, right? The unfortunate truth, as this post shows, is that these laws and these concepts you support are indeed enslaving women. It doesn’t really matter if you don’t like it, or if you don’t want that. The fact of supporting these laws makes it an automatic consequence. The fact is, the US government is now forcing women to give birth. If you can put aside for an instant the fetus, baby, whatever, that is what’s happening. I’m not sure you can imagine all the possible psychological and physical consequences of giving birth. Now it’s forced on women. Can you imagine if for 9 months you were forced to do something that you don’t want, that has lifelong consequences and may put your life at risk? And this not only for adults, but also minors. Let’s bring it close: imagine you have a 13yo daughter. She is in school and may not have understood all of the sex ed that I’m sure you and the school system has given her yet. Her cycle has already started. Then she’s maybe r*ped maybe not and now she’s pregnant. Would you let her go through with the pregnancy, the trauma of it and the risks? It’s a 13 yo. What if it’s ectopic and she dies? What if she gives birth and she dies?
In conclusion, it’s a lot like treating women like cattle. Also please don’t reply with anything like “but the baby”. A 13yo is a baby.
One movie is a deeply-troubling psychological thriller about the man made horrors beyond your comprehension, that shakes you to your very core, the other tells the story of the discovery of the atomic bomb.
If you told me reddit was just funded as a giant psychological experiment to see how much shit people will put up with to stay on social media, I might believe you.
I don’t really understand why people do it. Not like “they’re doing it because they are depressed and feel bad”, I had depression myself but never had a call to injure myself. I hate pain, and doing something painful to myself while I’m already feeling bad doesn’t really sound appealing. So I don’t quite get what...
One important thing to note is that for many it hurts a lot less than you’d think, basically feeling like a light scratch.
Wikipedia has more detailed information and sources:
Those who engage in self-harm face the contradictory reality of harming themselves while at the same time obtaining relief from this act. It may even be hard for some to actually initiate cutting, but they often do because they know the relief that will follow. For some self-harmers this relief is primarily psychological while for others this feeling of relief comes from the beta endorphins released in the brain.
Endorphins are endogenous opioids that are released in response to physical injury, acting as natural painkillers and inducing pleasant feelings, and in response to self-harm would act to reduce tension and emotional distress. Many self-harmers report feeling very little to no pain while self-harming and, for some, deliberate self-harm may become a means of seeking pleasure.
I believe you’re referring to the way some teenagers will brag about it covertly to their friends. Make no mistake, while on the surface it may appear as you say, that’s just the veneer of confidence they’re wearing that belies deeper inner turmoil. I won’t try to unpack what those turmoils are as they are different for everyone and I speak not as a psychological professional but as a professional educator.
What I encourage you to consider is the level of complexity people are burdened by and that when people with awful turmoil enter into your life, even just for a brief moment, that they should be first met with authentic empathy and care before cynicism as the stakes of treating these subjects with anything less are far too severe.
Or maybe seeing this habit be discussed openly and without prejudice will help some people to feel less like a freak for doing it when they realize that others do too, or will encourage them to seek help.
I know it's a horse of a different color, but the last time my depression got really bad I started smoking. I felt awfully guilty about it for months until my therapist said that it was natural for me to seek out endorphins however I could when I was failing to get them the natural way. That relieved the guilt, which in turn made me less psychologically dependent on cigarettes. Accepting that I smoked and that it was not ideal but still okay actually helped me to quit smoking later on, coupled with my regular therapy. Why would you deny that to people with other unhealthy habits? Or maybe you think that inhaling cancer smoke several times per day isn't a form of self-harm?
I think the UX team is banking on user psychology. Majority of users don’t want functionality, they want familiarity. They should feel like they are watching Tiktok.
We should remember that we power users are a minority in social media.
I’m sure it succeeds at times. There’s a lot of dumb people. However, I don’t see how that’s an algorithm’s fault and not the dumb person’s fault.
“The social dilemma” is absurd conspiracy shit lmao. C’mon man don’t tell me you believed that shit. Wait til you discover “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Moon”
I’m not gonna debunk the whole show (I’ll link one instead) but they hire psychologists because they’re pursuing engagement. I have no issue with that. Psychologists work a lot of jobs you wouldn’t expect. Psychology (and Philosophy) are actually strong undergrads for people who want Finance careers too.
I’m not sure what kind of background you have. Sure that movie is complex things ‘dumbed down’. It’s a movie.
What’s the difference between your “pursuing engagement” and my “get people addicted”. Fact is they carefully design apps to make them engaging. Play a tiktok video just in the right moment to keep you scrolling. sometimes even videos you dislike to invoke feelings. invent karma to keep you invested in your account. fine tune gameification to give rewards to your brain in exactly the right moments to keep you either engaged or buy in-game currency.
There’s a lot of dumb people.
And lots of the psychological tricks and methods are designed to be subtle enough to go unnoticed and not interfere.
Perhaps you never heard of the psychological targeting done for political purposes through the misuse of mass data. (Cambridge Analytics)
Edit: to be clear, people in the comments have already provided many examples of situations where corporations/governing bodies have misused specific people’s personal data (zoom employees watching webcams without knowledge), however I also don’t think it makes sense to brush off the impact of mass data available as a result of much of the population freely giving away their personal data.
I can’t speak for him. But, as someone who has had a dog as a family member, that dog may have made the psychological difference. Whole, “If not for me, then for this dog that is counting on me.”
Well, as I’ve wrote somewhere else, I have some minor expertise in evaluating business processes because of my job and I lived in London (UK) during the time when the largest supermarkt chains really started pushing self-checkout (the retail market is quite concentrated there)
I’ve also seen some attempts at that done were I am now, Portugal, in some supermarkets as well as how cashier operation can be done extremelly efficiently at the Lidl supermarket I used to shop in when living in Berlin.
From my observation when they install self-checkouts the supermarkets will not only reduce the numbers of manned tills but seem to purposefully reduce the number of people manning the available tills so as to push people to use self-checkout, and this happenned both in that transition in the UK and here in Portugal for the few supermarkets trying that, all noticeable because checkout via manned tills becomes slower when self-checkout is introduced compared to before that, something which logically does not make much sense without the “pushing people to use self-checkout” motivation (logically, with more tills in total waiting times at any till, manned or not, would become shorter, not longer).
Also there’s an interesting psychological effect applicable here which is that time passing when waiting feels a lot longer than time passing when busy (such as when doing the actual self-checkout), which in this situation means that even if the total time from queuing to leaving is longer because it takes you longer to scan all articles and pay, it can feel shorter if the waiting time is shorter.
(A interesting “sciency” experiement here is to actually measure it with a chronometer)
So yeah, if you look at it from an “in the moment” and not at all systemic point of view, it does seem that when there are self-checkouts they’re faster than manned tills, both because you’re not really counting operating-time like you count waiting-time and because the supermarkets seem to very purposefully underman their tills when introducing self-checkout to push people into self-checkout, probably because their long-term objective is to cut down on manpower hence boost profits (which is also why they won’t give you a discount for using self-checkout as that would go against the whole profit-enhancing motivation).
I've noticed that lemmy as a whole is much more leftist than reddit (outside of political servers of course)
I can’t really think of a reason for that as Reddit is hated somewhat equally by “both” sides of the spectrum. It’s just something I find interesting.
