Shifted to MX Linux, based on Debian, with Xfce desktop. Looks not bad in my opinion, but let's see how it goes. @thelinuxEXP @linux @Linux @debian

@thelinuxEXP @linux @Linux @debian A small update. For some reason, MX Linux has a lot of issues while installing software like RStudio, Discord etc. If I can't fix those somehow, I might hop distro again.

Update: Switched to Lubuntu to have an experience of LXQT. Let's hope it doesn't have those issues.

Longtermism poses a real threat to humanity

https://www.newstatesman.com/ideas/2023/08/longtermism-threat-humanity

"AI researchers such as Timnit Gebru affirm that longtermism is everywhere in Silicon Valley. The current race to create advanced AI by companies like OpenAI and DeepMind is driven in part by the longtermist ideology. Longtermists believe that if we create a “friendly” AI, it will solve all our problems and usher in a utopia, but if the AI is “misaligned”, it will destroy humanity...."

effective altruism specifically encourages wealthy people to keep their wealth to themselves, so that they can use their billionaire galaxy brains to more effectively direct that capital towards long-term good.

And how is that a bad thing? The alternative is to spend money on stuff that doesn’t work or even is actively harmful. The argument here is literally use less brain, do more pointless feelgood measures.

If, as they see it, Mars colonies tomorrow will help more people than healthcare or UBI or solar farms will today

Are we forgetting that Musk has an electric car company and used to have a solar company (since been absorbed into Tesla). He doesn’t just want to go to Mars, he does a lot of other stuff as well. Also why should billionaires be responsible for UBI and healthcare? If Musk would spend all his money on healthcare, you’d have healthcare for about three months before he is bankrupt. That kind of stuff is the governments job.

It’s an amazing ideology to have because if you can create a plausible future benefit you can do any real evil and feel like the good guy!

  • Stealed billions in wages from your workers? It’s alright, the funds will be used for you to gain influence and guide humanity to a better future!
  • Did you release a bioweapon in some global south country? It’s all right! Overpopulation was a danger 5 or 6 generations from now!
  • Destroyed democracy! It does not matter. Fascism today ensures democracy in the year 4000, trust me bro!

How to make yourself richer and protect the planet – Elevator Pitches

https://youtu.be/fCEIjEUlQr4

"To generate climate dividends, Barnes would implement a hard, declining carbon cap. (A tax ..., he says, is not enough ...) Permits would be auctioned ... to upstream sources, where carbon enters the economy. As the number of permits declined, permits would [increase in] value... and dividends would increase, driving a virtuous ... cycle that brings public support behind carbon reduction"

• Unemployment has now been under 4% for 18 months, the longest stretch in over 50 years

"Global burned area is decreasing, so does not exacerbate " - did you ever hear this argument, possibly continuing to label reports on recent catastrophic wildfires as "alarmist"? 🔥

This take was recently also published under the title ""Climate Change Hasn't Set the World on Fire" in the Wall Street Journal (https://www.wsj.com/articles/climate-change-hasnt-set-the-world-on-fire-global-warming-burn-record-low-713ad3a6).

In my opinion, this presents a misrepresentation of the science and reality behind the global distribution of wildfires (1/4)

It might be useful for new researchers to know how a journal editor screens submissions (obviously this is my approach and so it might differ for others).

I tend to start with a cold read of the abstract. By this I mean I try to do little more than glance at the title, as titles sometimes oversell or, at least, don't help my understanding of what the paper is about.

This is also why I read the cover letter second, so I have an outline of the paper before I'm subjected to the "pitch".

@onisillos really helpful! I’m sure others in will find this useful.

I was familiar with the cover letter pitch but good to know the importance of further background and what to do with the results. Thank you for sharing.
