Then why is it so goddam expensive?

phoenixz ,

I’ll be happy if the world remains liveable for humans until before I die. The next generation though, is screwed and I am so so sorry for that. And no, there is nothing I can do about it.

lntl OP ,

don’t get any ideas either! if you use direct action, you’ll be provided a prison cell in Cuba.

Yeh, more emissions under Biden. More large trucks and SUV's. Hotter summers, longer droughts, more of America being literally on fire.

lntl OP ,

this has been true for every consecutive president: Obama more than Bush, Trump more than Obama, Biden more than Trump. it has more to do with growth than whose in the oval office

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

The president oversees the department of energy. They could do quite a lot about US emissions. We need to stop giving them a pass for not.

lntl OP ,

legislation like this must be passed by congress. giving the president this authority is not democratic. could work in China though and they have plenty emissions

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

why does everyone think executive departments dont have any authority over anything. The Department of Energy has authority over US energy policy and production. Yes giving the president this authority is democratic, it's a goddamn elected position!

lntl OP ,

then what’s congress for?

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

Legislating

lntl OP ,

yes, this is where the laws come from the president enforces. the president is an enforcer. a president who acts without congress is authoritarian

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

Laws like The Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 which created the department of energy and authorized it to oversee US energy policy and production.

lntl OP ,

they can set and enforce efficiency standards, yes. do you think that’s going to fix us emissions?

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

They set and enforce national energy policy

lntl OP ,

What do you think that means? Said another way, what kinds of authorities do you think setting and enforcing national energy policy gives them? (Hint: Dictating efficiencies for equipment and appliances is one of their authorities)

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

You know one thing about the department of energy and assume thats the entirety. Funnily, the legislation doesnt mention energy effiency standardization, but it does mention natural gas several times. And nuclear energy, and oil, and coal, and solar, and geothermal energy. Here's the act if you want to read it https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/95/s826/summary

lntl OP ,

At least I know something. You know nothing and assume everything.

blazera ,
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

I dont know that the legislation references natural gas 12 times?

Drusas ,

That's great and all, but fracking is terrible for the environment. Not exactly a win.

railsdev ,

Everyday while I’m working from home I get alerts about “gas smell,” “gas leak,” and all the related fires that come with it. Right now they’re repairing a gas line just a few blocks from me.

It’s time to move on. Seriously we have 100% renewable electricity where I’m at. Why are we putting up with this shit?

PeepinGoodArgs ,

Are we energy independent enough for Republicans yet? Or is Biden still knee-capping our national security by producing too little?

lntl OP ,

If republicans were in the white house, we could have grown by even more percentages!! So many percentages… and the best ones too. People around the world would talk about how many great percentages we would have if we didn’t have Biden.

protist ,

Republicans don’t care about energy independence, they care about money from industry lobbyists and talking points. If they cared about energy independence they’d be all in on wind and solar and moving toward electrification rather than depending on a commodity influenced by a global market

bobs_monkey ,

All I know is that my gas bill is 50% higher than last year, my power bill is about 30% higher, I can’t afford any of this shit, and winter is right around the corner.

lntl OP ,

America is the land of the free: work harder and pull yourself up if you’re struggling. Your potential is unlimited.

NewNewAccount ,
Corkyskog ,

Aren’t we selling this on the open market?

p1mrx ,

A lot of it’s going to Europe as a replacement for Russian gas.

The main problem is that everybody’s been switching from coal to gas instead of wind/solar/nuclear, as if drinking more water makes it ok to piss in the pool.

zephyreks ,

Wasn’t natural gas mostly used because coal was literally causing cancer and dog shit air quality everywhere?

Also, natural gas is a pretty efficient source of heating as far as things go… At least until heat pumps got reliable enough to replace it.

p1mrx ,

Methane is certainly less bad than coal, but it still moves carbon from the ground to the air that we don’t know how to move back.
