Prepare for the most boomer comment ever…

“_Looking for a suicide partner, we used to call that marriage.”

apotheotic , in Giant spiders the size of rats making a comeback in UK

That’s so nice! I’m so happy for them! Is there a map of exactly where they’re making a comeback so I can avoid those places particularly!

grrgyle , in Liz Truss: Oppressed by Tweets, Victimized by Reality

I wonder why it feels different when “far right” activists disrupt a public event? Hmmm, hmmmmm I guess it’s a mystery

MrNesser , in Liz Truss: Oppressed by Tweets, Victimized by Reality

I assume far right would have stormed the stage thrown racial slurs around and venerated Liz Truss as the 2nd coming.

But that is just an assumption just like her assumption that she could run an economy.

HumongousChungus , in Schools to teach children how to spot fake news and ‘putrid’ conspiracies online

As always, things will focus more on vibes and credentialism than critical thinking, because conspiracy theories are a mainstay of all the ‘serious’ papers and conspiracy itself is just how power has functioned for the last few centuries

fox ,

There’s two kinds of conspiracies:

  1. Ultimately antisemitic nonsense
  2. Admitted to by the government thirty years after the fact

I_Has_A_Hat , in Civil servants cannot wear ‘fetish gear’ to work, minister confirms

I feel like before I can form an opinion, I need to see the outfit in question. There is a description, but it’s not very detailed and not exactly from a neutral source. As described though, it sounds like she was dressed like Dr. Frankenfurter, with a choker instead of a pearl necklace. Which… Yea, that’s not a workplace outfit for a civil servant.

But then again, it could be tame as hell. I have no idea. Because despite writing an article about it, apparently a photo is just too much to expect from modern journalism.

derpgon ,

It’s probably about lingerie, bandage, butt plugs, etc.

Streamwave ,

There really is no plausible ‘fetish outfit’ that could possibly under any circumstances be appropriate for work at the Civil Service.

Emperor , in Civil servants cannot wear ‘fetish gear’ to work, minister confirms
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

It does make me wonder if they know what fetish gear looks like but going by the photo of the Baroness, I doubt she’d recognised it if it walked up to her in the street and asked for her safe word.

Depending on the dress code, this is, at best, an HR issue but it seems like the Tory press are trying to make it the next front in the culture war. We should take a leaf out of the Democrat’s playbook and refuse to engage them, as this is just weird.

Charzard4261 , in Elon Musk shares fake news about England rioters being sent to Falklands

Obviously he doesn’t spend enough time causing issues for his own companies and country, that he has to try and stir shit across the pond to cure his boredom.

How about doing something good with that spare time for once?

Emperor OP , in Fish and chips price rise tops UK takeaways
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

My favourite local Chinese takeaway has stickers on the menu saying the prices aren’t accurate, presumably because they got a big batch printed and don’t fancy binning them. As they don’t have an online presence, you have to order by phone or in person, so you never know how much it’s going to cost. Despite this, they are always run off their feet as the food is a level above the competitions - the salt and pepper siu mai are divine.

downpunxx ,

I mean I get that prices have gone up, but it's not difficult or costly these days to print out correct pricing for accurate up to date, in store menus, should someone call in for an order, remind them over the phone prices have changed, and tell them what each item will cost when they order it, anything other is shady as fuck, no matter how good the food is, it would probably annoy me to the point of going elsewhere. Probably. Unless they sold huge old school new york take out egg rolls as big as half your arm, if they did that I'd turn my pockets inside out until lint fell out.

10_0 ,

Nah ask for the total on the phone, no point in the food getting to you and not don’t having enough cash on hand

I suspect I’ve got a bad read on this, but I mean… if you’re going to do it, wouldn’t you want someone to do it with too? Companionship in those final moments?

Maybe ‘The Seventh Continent’ had the wrong impression on me.

I’d have thought that the least worst answer is to legalise assisted dying. It won’t be easy getting the balance right, and I know disability campaigners are especially concerned about it, but it has to be better than having a “suicide buddy” website that is wide open to abuse.

Palacegalleryratio ,
@Palacegalleryratio@hexbear.net avatar

Yeah. Got to be better. Also rather than banning this website, wouldn’t it be better to look into what is driving people to suicide? I’m guessing a lot of it is social, health and economic conditions that could be addressed by government if they truly cared and weren’t just moralising.

echodot , in Journalist Richard Medhurst arrested under Britain’s Terrorism Act

Independent journalist Richard Medhurst was arrested by British police under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act

Just for clarity he’s an independent journalist not a journalist for the independent newspaper.

He’s just some rag who posts a lot on his blog. He’s not exactly mainstream. Which is presumably why there isn’t a lot of news about this.

Streamwave ,

He also regularly writes for and appears on Al Mayadeen (Hezbollah affiliates), the Iranian Regime’s Press TV, and Russia Today.

And yes, you would be correct if you guessed his views on Syria’s Bashar al-Assad based on this information.

Charzard4261 , in Golden age of English universities could be over, says head of watchdog

Increased tuition fees? I guess 50k in debt isn’t enough punishment for a decision 18 year olds are pressured to make.

Are European universities struggling as much? Because my (same age) co-workers say they only had a few thousand in debt for their entire courses, so there must be another way of doing things.

ArbitraryValue , in Ambulances called to Amazon’s UK warehouses 1,400 times in five years

It’s strange to me that people working there apparently have relatively frequent strokes. Am I underestimating how many strokes people doing difficult physical labor generally have (my impression was “not many”) or is there something uniquely dangerous about the Amazon warehouses?

Emperor OP ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

It’s unclear and you’d need a lot more data to draw any kind of conclusions - not just the rate in the general population (for the age group) as well as those working similar jobs. It would be unusual to find a lot of strokes in working age people but a friend of mine had one at work.kn her late 40s (but she had a genetic predisposition - her father died at the same age from a heart attack).

The suggestion has been that the working conditions in Amazon factories is especially brutal because the packers are standing for such long periods of time with few breaks and have high targets they need to hit leading to considerable stress. The TUC have a page on working conditions at fulfilment centres.

It's unfortunate that they missed out on Trade Union recognition at the Coventry facility recently. I'm sure GMD (or others) will keep on trying though.
