Microsoft shuts down Cortana app on Windows 11 | The digital assistant was first part of Windows Phone and now it’s being discontinued on Windows.::Microsoft has discontinued Cortana on Windows 11. The digital assistant no longer functions as a standalone app, years after Microsoft shut down its Cortana iOS and Android apps.

Psyduck_world ,

Still waiting for them to shutdown OneDrive, tbh it’s a thousand times more annoying than Cortana.

All of this could have been avoided if they hadn’t doubled down on Halo.

Oh no.

Anyways…

ElPussyKangaroo ,

I miss that era of Microsoft.

Cortana being insanely fun to use, Windows Phone existing, the future looking pretty cool.

Then Microsoft Microsoft-ed so hard they had to end it all

Is this missing a /s? I genuinely can’t tell. All I can remember from that era was people shitting on them for windows 8.

mindlight ,

Metro was genius on Windows Phone. Not so much on Windows 8.

What was even worse than Metro on Windows 8 was Metro on Windows 2008. OMFG… the amount nervous breakdowns I’ve had when remoting a server in a window, trying to click the pixel in the bottom left corner to access the start menu.

ElPussyKangaroo ,

No /s. Genuine love for Metro on Windows Phone.

There is still .NET which is best microsoft-made thing in existence IMO. And it’s open source.

AngryMob ,

Its such a shame they wasted that name on such a dud. An actually useful AI helper named cortana is a no-brainer for them.

Imgonnatrythis ,

Cmon, hopefully they are setting stage for the return of Clippy!

atzanteol ,

And nothing of value was lost. Can’t wait for the next turd they force on us.

It’s already here. Or didn’t you notice them pushing Bing AI?

atzanteol ,

sigh I did not … but I run Linux primarily.

krayj ,

Wow, finally.

I am so tired of having to disable it every time I have to reinstall windows on a system.

I’m sure to eventually be replaced by even more invasive CoPilot. arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/06/…/amp/

But this one is actually useful…

huginn ,

ish.

When programming I find it is often wrong both logically and in attempting to infer what I’m writing, on top of being slow.

It’s useful for generating documentation, but that’s about it in my experience. Maybe it’s just the Intellij plugin that makes it so slow.

Daydreamer ,

With copilot starting to roll out this seems reasonable

Good riddance.

Rampant post

djmarcone ,

I use windows boxes all the time every day and have since windows 3.1 and I’ve never used cortana.

I don’t know of anyone who has. Ever.

arefx ,

I tried to use it once and it didn’t work so I just forgot about it.

freeman ,

I used it once. When it first came out. When imaging 125 machines at once.

Just turned the volume up and let all the Cortana’s just yammer away at the same time.

It was beautiful.

I then shut them all down and Reimaged them with an image that had it disabled by policy.

echoplex21 ,

Microsoft just keeps killing off Cortanas don’t they?
