Before I updated my car I used the headphone jack regularly for playing music there. Otherwise it was relegated to a couple situations a year like air travel.

Now that I’ve got a newer vehicle I just have all my music on USB there.

pineapplelover ,

I use IEMs and wired headphones. Having a headphone jack would be game changer since I can charge and play music at the same time (I don’t want to buy a 2 in 1 dongle).

_s10e ,

I don’t use wired headphones with my phone anymore since it doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack, but I miss that i cannot plug my headphone quickly in a laptop’s 3.5mm jack quickly.

I like that binary nature of cables. When physically connected they work. No fiddling with Bluetooth menus.

tocopherol ,

I don’t have a jack, just USB-C and with the cable and adapter it’s still much worse. If it was 3.5mm my phone would know it’s just a stereo headset, but because I use have to use a USB-c adapter, it gets slightly loose and will pause the music, or play if it is paused, skip tracks, etc. The 3.5mm plug is ancient in terms of tech but still is the best plug format for headphones imo.

Iamdanno ,

What’s a headphone jack?

JK, I used to use mine a lot, when I had one. I was sad to see it go, but I’ve moved on. I can use the USB-C port just as easily, if I want to.

I still listen to radio on my phone. Wired headphones are required, as they serve as the antenna.

Other than that, I do a lot of running. Given how often it rains, headphones last no longer than half a year, and wired ones are far cheaper to replace. (I do have a pair of wireless Shockz, which handle water very well, but they are not good for city running with high ambient noise.)

enix ,

It kinda defeats the purpose of open ear but try wearing earplugs.

That’s what I do when I use loud tools with my shockz

That’s what I’ve been using when flying and when running on a treadmill in a busy gym. But as you said, it does defeat the purpose of hearing your surroundings, so otherwise I keep to headphones where I can regulate the volume to hear better without completely blocking the external sound.

systemglitch ,

I do. Nice feature I always appreciate having it.

JakenVeina ,

Occasionally. If I’m at my desk and I get a call, I’ll move my wired headset over from my PC to my phone.

eclectic_electron ,

The only thing I miss it for is plugging into the car. I’ve got Bluetooth adapters now though that work pretty well. In theory I might run into a situation where it would be nice to be able to plug into a speaker or someone else’s car or something, but BT is so common it doesn’t really come up.

m0darn ,

The most recent phone I purchased does not a 3.5mm jack. It wasn’t really a decision I realized I was making, as the phone’s previous iteration had had it in an era when that wasn’t a given.

There have been a few times that I’ve missed it, not many, certainly fewer than 10 never a huge deal. But that’s infinitely more times than I’ve thought:

I’m so glad my phone doesn’t have a headphone jack.

Next phone will definitely have one because honestly

yeah I might use that

Is enough justification to spend $0.25 (if that) for them to integrate a jack. What stupid cost cutting.

jasondj ,

It’s not really about the cost of the jack, moreso about the aesthetic and the ability for water to get in, because the 3.5mm barrel jack was never really intended to be on something you’d worry about getting wet. At least not at a time when waterproof ratings were a thing.

You’re talking 163mm^3 of void space inside the phone just for the barrel plug itself, plus the enclosure around it, spring load mechanisms, and housing to sit on the board. A board that also has to change position or shape to accommodate the deep round plug where it can’t exist.

Honestly I’m really surprised phones moved to 3.5mm and didn’t try to team up with laptops to keep 2.5mm the norm on those platforms, or some other plug. Had they stuck with it it probably would’ve won and also made its way to game controllers.

But there’s really no need to when Bluetooth exists and is good enough for the vast majority of consumers, and that’s all that really matters.

tocopherol ,

I don’t mind a phone having one input, for audio and charge/data, it probably is a great choice from a production stand point. It is unfortunate how much less reliable the USB-C physical connection seems to be versus the 3.5mm though. I don’t know if it’s just me, but every USB-C device I’ve had eventually gets finicky with the connection, regardless of cable and cleanliness. My phone now using headphones with an adapter, if I move it much it will come loose and pause the playback. The 10+ year old phone I have with a 3.5mm jack though, I can swing it around holding the cord and it stays rock solid connected.

jasondj ,

Get a phone case with a dust cover or really clean the hell out of that port.

I was honestly surprised with how aggressive I have to be to scrape out packed lint. Using a toothpick I shaved to be a little fatter.

Now I take my vacuum (Miele) with the dust brush, on high, and go to town on the bottom of my phones like once a week.

RedAggroBest ,

You don’t think about how glad you are you don’t have a jack because you’re thinking about the nicer camera or bigger battery, or both, rather than the jack. No matter which way you fall the reasoning certainly isn’t just cost cutting

m0darn ,
sturmblast ,

I do all the time.

ZeroTHM ,

All the time, even when Bluetooth is available instead. It’s simply more reliable.

I use it every day, plus a 512 GB SD card to store ROMs, striping functionalities is ridiculous.

NOFF ,

When I had a phone with a jack, I used it daily to listen to podcasts or music during my commute. Now, without a jack, I use a converter daily to listen to podcasts and music during my commute, but can no longer charge my phone and listen at the same time.

almost daily. really glad with my current wired earbuds, they are lasting years with constant use, with really thin wires and all

festus ,

Do you have a link to them? I tend to need to replace mine every couple of months and it’s infuriating.

Tlaloc_Temporal ,

Try some sports/exercise focused earbuds, they tend to be more durable.

Could also check /r/headphones. I’ve been happy with my Letshuoer S12 I got on a recommendation from there. Pricey, but I’m happy with the quality after churning through cheap pairs.

i tried but can’t find any. they’re Pioneer wired earbuds with ear hooks (sports style), black in color, and were quite inexpensive - about 13€ IIRC. i got them in some local store

i have them for about 7, 8 years and, while i haven’t used them daily for all that time, i’ve done so extensively, a lot of times outside, while running and in different circunstances where i have not always been very careful with handling the wires

i’m quite amazed at their durability - something i am very fond of in the items i use frequently and that often frustrates me

edit: to add that also the sound quality is quite good, and they even cancel a decent chuck of outside noise! this is some good sht man*

since i’m selling them so well and i can’t find a reference in the webs or in the object itself, here’s a photo

black wired earbuds with hooks

Used mine every day until that phone’s screen stopped responding and at the time none of the otherwise decent phones with decent prices had a jack. Headphone jack will remain a consideration in my next phone purchase once this one dies.
