Here’s fun little update on this …

No relevant software was changed, but with the latest system update the Steam Flatpak runs all the udpates as it did before, but now this is logged (all the update and initial installation/setup stuff was done at this point):

But no matter what I select except Restart steamwebhelper the Flatpak quits and nothing more happens. When Restart steamwebhelper is selected sometimes the steam UI shows up but I cannot select anything from any dropdowns and cannot change most of the settings sliders. But most of the time this is logged and nothing happens:

So we’re a bit further with this now. I now get an error message most of the time and occasionally can see the steam UI with partial access 🤣

So, who knows … maybe 2-3 more months and I can use Steam again like before …

I wouldn’t be worried, in the same leak they expressed hopes of buying fucking Nintendo. Antitrust regulators would have a fucking field day.

Valve is a private company, so we don’t know for sure how much they are worth, but if MS wanted to buy them, I’d wager my house that the figure would be way more then they spent/will spend on Activison. By a magnitude of 3 or 4 at least. Valve is a literal money printing machine. They make so much money that they don’t care that they have a squeal they could release that would make more money than damn near any other game ever released.

And for the record, I’m not saying Microsoft can’t afford them, just saying it would hurt to do so.

Yeah, would take ages to recoup the cost. Plus, you might not even recoup the cost as markets may change or Steam gets mismanaged by new management. Strategically Steam and Valve would also offer little advantage to Microsoft for the price.

Well, remember that recent Microsoft leak that showed off a bunch of potential game releases?

In an email from Phil Spencer spotted by The Verge, there was talk about their plans including wanting to buy up the likes of Nintendo and even Valve with Spencer noting “But our BoD has seen the full writeup on Nintendo (and Valve) and they are fully supportive on either if opportunity arises as am I” (BoD being Board of Directors).

Not that Valve has any need at all to sell, they pretty much print money thanks to their 30% cut from most developers on Steam.

If the above ever were to happen, it’s not really likely they would continue all of Valve’s big investments into Linux given how even with the Steam Deck the market is small.

After all, Valve put all these resources into Linux because they don’t want to be entirely at the whims of Microsoft for their store, and Valve clearly want their own platform so Linux with Proton + Steam Deck is key to that.

So, Microsoft, please continue to keep your filthy hands off Valve (but keep putting your games on Steam okay?

It looks quite fun indeed, I actually came back to payday 2 because od random YouTube videos, that made me discover that there is a Career Mode where missions follow a certain path which I didn’t even know before. Even after buying the game back then I was a bit scared of learning new levels, so I’m actually having fun discovering a whole new payday 2 now! Might move to Payday 3 after

Yes, it works for that but it will not work to make a game “unplayed” and have the achievements not count toward the overall completion rate. Unless things have changed.

Interesting to see Valve at 6.5 bn, I would have guessed they were higher given the extent of Steam as a distribution platform. But I guess that makes sense some other companies have a myriad of other digital and physical products, where Valve has only their small slice in both (Half Life, Counter Strike, L4D, Ricochet for digital, and Steam Deck, Index, some merchandise for physical)

An interesting thing to note is how big mobile gaming is when compared to PC gaming.

Apple and Google are largely on here because of their 30% platform cut (this chart only tracks gaming revenue). Steam takes the same cut yet has less than half the revenue.

(Note that while Tencent and NetEase are largely mobile publishers, they are not exclusively mobile publishers - League of Legends is owned by Tencent.)

It’s interesting to me that Amazon isn’t on this list. AWS is massive, it’s the biggest cloud provider in the world and Luna still exists.
