Professorozone , in Star Trek: Lower Decks to Conclude with Fifth and Final Season

Ahhhhhhh, that was my favorite one. So much fun.

Blue_Morpho , in Star Trek: Lower Decks to Conclude with Fifth and Final Season

Lower Decks is the only reason I subscribe to Paramount. Although I do it strategically: wait for season to end, subscribe, watch it all, unsub.

aeronmelon , in Was Trelaine a Q? Let's discuss.

It isn’t canon, but it could easily be made canon. And even though I didn’t really like the idea at first, I now feel like it would be a good way to retroactively shore up Star Trek lore.

I find it hard to believe that there are MULTIPLE demigod-like species in the Milky Way alone. I feel like they would have stepped on each other’s toes until only one prevailed (actual gods like the Prophets wouldn’t care or be affected). Having Trelaine just be an errant baby “Q” who got scolded for consorting with mortals prevents that inevitability.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Although… a war between the Organians and the Q (or whatever other beings) might be an interesting thing to explore.

The_Picard_Maneuver , in How big is the Enterprise?
@The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world avatar

It’s like a giant flying hotel in my mind. I love how much focus there was in TNG on all the living quarters and families on the ship, because it emphasizes the fact that they’re on a mission of exploration, not war.

BananaTrifleViolin , in Star Trek: Legacy Dead, We Mourn Series That Felt So Right

I dunno, I’m not that bothered by this. I liked season 3 of Picard but it is still overrated. It was better than the trash that was seasons 1 and 2, but it was ultimately a nostalgia fest and also a silly plot, and not really very star trek. The big step up was a return to characterisation - I get that people like that, but when you look at the plot it’s just silly.

The world created is too dark, statfleet too militaristic, and they shat on the utopian outlook of the TNG. I think Seven would make an interesting captain, but they killed off the interesting characters (like captain shaw and the vulcan character who was pointlessly executed) and kept poor characters like Picard son.

I like strange new worlds, it’s great. I can see Legacy could be good in the right hands, but I’m not sold on the premise shoe horned in to the end of Picard or the characters left. Ed Speelers certainly isn’t up to it frankly. And Picard could have been good show but overall was poor - it’s more than the concept; you need a good story and Picards weren’t good stories.

From Paramount point of view, do they need another SNW at the moment? Probably not.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

SNW is pretty damn dark…

Season 2 Episode 7, Those Old Scientists. Looks like this photo was taken while they were shooting the scene where Spock, M’Benga, and Boimler were on the surface of Krulmuth B, investigating the Krulmuth B portal, one of my all time favorite portals, which threw Boimler back in time.

conditional_soup ,

I love that the end of this episode implies that everyone on lower decks is just really drunk all the time.

FlyingSquid , in [DISCUSSION] Paris and Janeway were able to be de-salamandered so why didn't Voyager Warp 10 home and let The Doctor fix them?
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Even Ex Astris Scientia can’t make this one work.

ex-astris-scientia.org/…/inconsistencies-voy.htm#…

And it’s described in LD as that is exactly what happened, so it’s hard to get around it.

jesus_fish , in Should there have been a Voyager episode or two after they got home?

Yes, would have loved that. I imagine after all those years everyone was probably ready to be done with the show though.

That shocked me too!

I’m also shocked at how badly Nemesis did.

grue ,
someguy3 , (edited ) in Jellico and Riker didn't get along. Who's fault was that?

Now that I watch it older and with leadership in mind:

Both.

Jellico needed to make it clear what his priorities were and why. He needed to acknowledge the sudden change in everything (mission, preparedness, strictness, etc) and hardship on the crew. He didn’t have much choice but he had to go about it differently. Without clarity his changes just seem harsh. He should have had a preparatory statement for the crew when he took command and a closer rapport with Riker to get it done.

Riker and all needed to respect the Captain’s direction. Also if Jellico couldn’t convey it, they should have picked up on it from the mission and their training as officers. Especially Riker, who is supposed to be ready to be captain in case Jellico dies and who should have given the other officers any support missing from Jellico.

Xeroxchasechase , in Best place to start

It’s probably not something the community will agree, but I think “Strange New Worlds” is the best place to start. It has the soul and the essense of star trek, great episodes and acting and it’s modern, so you wont get bored from a 90’s series astettics. Afterwards you might want to go the usual path of TNG, VOY, DS9 and Enterprise, these are the essentials.

Lower Decks is fun series with Huge amounts of references, you might want to have a look.

Discovery and Picard are good serieses on their own, and they are integral part of the canon, they just don’t have the same storytelling style as the star trek. Last season of Picard I cryed my guts, but that’s just because I saw TNG, VOY etc… before.

Sorry for skippimg the original series, it’s just really hard to watch with 60’s astettics.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think SNW is the worst place to start, especially for someone who, as I said below, might have less of a tolerance for what earlier decades thought the future would be like. The only problem might be not getting some of the references.

Xeroxchasechase ,

Yes, that’s right. But the shows works even without the references. Unlike Picard season 3, for example, which is not just filled with references but knowing and watching all the previus shows is essential to fully enjoy it. I couldn’t imagine seeing the villain (No spoilers) for the first time without feeling the horror that was built in TNG

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

DS9 would also be needed for Picard Season 3.

morphballganon ,

Why do you spell aesthetics like that?

The short answer is because the autocorrect didn’t correct it. I’m not a native English speaker

canis_majoris , in Star Trek's Jeri Ryan Felt "More Connected" To Seven of Nine in Picard Season 3 Than Voyager
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

Once they established her character as a, well, human, she was able to actually continue with the momentum set up in Voyager.

The problem initially was that the Fenris Rangers stuff was weird random bullshit with no real explanation and effectively just made her a morally grey mercenary at best and an outright murderer at worst. I remember reading initially when she got the Picard script that she had a panic attack because she could not recognize the character at all.

I will never get the image of Icheb getting his eye ripped out and cut out of my head. Stuff like that was absolutely unnecessary and made the show weaker overall.

dpkonofa ,

Holy shit, yo. He got his eye ripped out of your head?! That’s nuts. /s

Klingon death metal was featured as a end gag on a Lower Decks episode and it made me want an entire album.

It’s Klingon Acid Punk iirc

GreenMario ,

That’s even better. Whatever the case, full album please and tour with Dethklok.
