There are creatures in the universe who would consider you the ultimate achievement, android. No feelings, no emotions, no pain… And yet you covet those qualities of humanity. Believe me, you’re missing nothing. But if it means anything to you - you’re a better human than I.

someguy3 , (edited ) in What's the deal with enlisted Starfleet ranks?

It’s hard to show the intricate workings of hundreds of crewmen. It’s just not practical or in the budget. Crewmen pop up every now and then if you pay attention.

Someone said Master and Commander can be seen as similar to Star Trek, and it certainly has the same ship command structure. The crewmen play a larger role and they really cover the dynamic. Very much worth a watch with or without connection to Star Trek.

APassenger , in Did TOS set the precedent for the medical doctor to play such a big role?

I mean, you have all these people, unique, varied and dangerous situations… The role of the doctor would be significant.

If I was in charge, I’d maintain consistent rapport, if not relationship, with them.

Specialised crew members capable of providing medical care have been a feature of military vessels for at least two thousand years. — wikipedia

yeah, I just think it suggests the sort of tv shows you might look for.

Exactly. Those vessels have cooks too but they’re not on tv

morphballganon , in Did TOS set the precedent for the medical doctor to play such a big role?

If your premise has characters facing danger somewhat frequently, it makes sense to have someone who can heal around.

Also, with so many unknown space-originating ailments, it’s creepy to hear a doctor of high rank say “I don’t know what this is or how to fix it.” It adds to the stakes of the show.

Stories often have an author-as-character, where the writer(s) use a certain wise character to voice their own opinions.

TOS just merged these ideas into one character.
