The arty shells are hard for us, we just didn’t equip our armies to fight that sort of war, and it takes a long time to build an arty shell factory. We prefer to deliver our explosives from planes than shoot them out of tubes.

You want a whole bunch of arty shells tomorrow, keep pressuring the S Koreans to change their policy about selling arms. They could get you fixed right up if they did.

The aviation, yeah, we should do better there. Those we have. And how about those Gripens, Sweden? Coming along?

awwwyissss OP ,

Agreed. The paucity of shells is somewhat understandable, the lack of jets (and other equipment) is a clear misstep by Europe, the US and other allies.

CrimeDad ,

My understanding is that the NATO countries simply cannot match Russia’s artillery shell production and it would take years to build up the capacity to do so. Should have negotiated an end to this war over a year ago.

cooljacob204 ,

We can easily match it. That's a lie. We have enough reserves to hold us over until factories spin up.

CrimeDad ,

Take it up with this guy: lemmy.crimedad.work/comment/652861

melpomenesclevage ,

Depends on who you include in ‘we’; maybe. Its not getting to Ukraine though.

Nouveau_Burnswick ,

The shell producting is correct: www.cnn.com/2024/03/10/politics/…/index.html

Negotiation was already tried with Crimea.

CrimeDad ,

Negotiation was already tried with Crimea.

Oh, dang. I guess the only way out is for Ukraine surrender unconditionally.

Or you can pressure your legislators to give them more weapons to defend themselves with

CrimeDad ,

But I want the war and the killing to stop. We don’t need to expand NATO. We need to abolish it.

Zipitydew ,

Russia can leave then you dumbass tankie.

CrimeDad ,
NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

Then blame the country doing the invading you schlub

CrimeDad ,

Negotiations do not preclude blame. Please refrain from name-calling.

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

You sound like Neville Chamberlain, Russia already violated two Minsk Accords. They use negotiations when convenient and then violate them when they feel it is worth it. People like Putin only respect hard power

ZILtoid1991 ,

Issue is, Russia wants to take Ukraine over, and destroy its culture.

CrimeDad ,

I’m pretty sure the issue is just NATO containment.

Woozythebear ,

Ukraine culture is literally Russian culture…

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

No it’s not. This is like saying Irish culture is British culture.

Woozythebear ,

More like Canadian culture is American culture and it pretty much is.

Brb off to invade Canada

melpomenesclevage , (edited )

Other way around. Historically and if you look atgeographic origins of like 50% of cool stuff that came out of the late czarist empire+USSR.

Russian culture is a ukranian import. Even the name ‘russia’ comes from the city of Kiev.

el_bhm ,

Any agreement russia signs was broken. Often by the same leader that signed it. Any peace deal with putana means more time for them to prepare.

The reason russia is pushing so hard right now is because the EU started getting into gear. Europe has 10x the GDP. Translate this into wartime economy and russian nazis are in a tough spot. With or without the USA.

CrimeDad ,

If the EU is only starting to get into gear after (arguably) ten years… I dunno man, who needs enemies with friends like that.

melpomenesclevage ,

Nobody, Europe sucks, but it sucks because they let liberals who care about literally nothing but feeling good make all the decisions. They do have capacity, their shittiness is thst it doesnt go wjere needed, and once it gets started that’s going to be really fucking unpleasant for anybody on the other end.

Which is hopefully Russia. Zelensky is kind of the perfect guy to manage this part.

Zipitydew ,

The issue is heavy artillery focus in an offensive capacity is a bad way to fight now. NATO can and does go for air superiority right away. Fighting Russian style with artillery bombardment is WWI stuff. Air support can quickly neutralize such a force.

NATO doesn’t spec for artillery focus like Russia and therefore doesn’t need that level of shell production. The catch for Ukraine is most of their equipment is inherited Soviet Union stockpiles. And they don’t have a large enough air force to attempt air superiority. So they’re stuck fighting against Russia using similar systems and strategy.

When Ukraine receives F16s next month some need for artillery will start to decrease. F16 can be used in an attack role. And Ukraine will be receiving HARMs missiles which will help knock out even more of Russia’s air defenses. Which potentially snowballs into Ukraine being able to do more close air support. If that happens, they can hopefully start shifting artillery to being used defensively. Using it for offense and defense as they are now is what’s outstripping supply.

CrimeDad ,

This reply reminds me of people insisting that a short squeeze is imminent in any of the shady stock trading subreddits.

Zipitydew ,

Ukraine fucking Russian forces up with drones is CAS on small scale. If you can’t/don’t want to understand that you’re welcome to look ignorant.

Woozythebear ,

You ain’t wrong but the basement dwellers that would never step foot in a combat zone that cheer on death will downvote you to hell.

CrimeDad ,

I think they’re mostly russophobic libs who do not actually give a shit about Ukraine or Ukrainian lives. It’s fine though. The down votes are fake on here.

Cypher ,

The best way to protect Ukrainian lives is for Russia to pack up and go home.

There is zero need for this war. This is simply Putin’s fantasy of rebuilding a Russian empire on the corpses of Russian neighbours.

Woozythebear ,

The best way to protect Ukrainian lives is to have peace talks and negotiate cease fires. The war started for many reasons and if Mexico or Canada was doing what Ukraine was then America would have done the same as Russia.

Cypher ,

If Mexico or Canada defended themselves from invasion there would be a war.

You’re a fucking genius. No really.

GreyEyedGhost ,

Or Cuba, right? Did we forget about Cuba. When did the (large-scale) fighting stop? The 1960s?

CrimeDad ,

The best way to protect Ukrainian lives is for Russia to pack up and go home.

Yes negotiations are how this is accomplished.

melpomenesclevage ,

If Russia can make anything, which I’m sketchy on, it would be artillery shells. That’s kind of their secondary thing, militarily (their primary being zapp brannigan victories)

Empricorn ,

I bet you love the taste of Putin’s balls.

CrimeDad ,

This is not a forum for sexual harassment.

Diplomjodler3 ,

But the traitors in the US Congress have other ideas. And the Europeans really really have to get their asses into gear.

melpomenesclevage ,

Honestly, if they really wanted to stop the killing, they’d just decapitate the state. Might need to be more than one guy down, but, like… Would save millions on both sides.

geography082 ,

Is not that how some current potencies got ritch as fuck ?.

lurch ,

what?

pigup ,

U don’t know about the current potencies ?. The ones that are ritch ?.

Empricorn ,

A propagandist didn’t study as hard as they should have…

username_unavailable ,

I thought that pipe overhead was a huge selfie stick.

jaybone ,

It’s the selfiest stick.

melpomenesclevage ,

Its cannon now. Also, possibly a cannon (disused for lack of shells). I can no longer be convinced otherwise.
