What are your favorite single player games to go back to?

What are your favorite single player games to go back to often?

  • Minecraft
  • Furi
  • Mario 64
  • Super Mario World
  • GTA SA and Vice City

It’s kinda rare for me to go back to a single player game and replay it, but there are some games that are nostalgic in the same way place or smell can be nostalgic.

I know them so well that I can’t help but want to go back and visit and I never really get disappointment by the experience. Sure, I don’t get as immersed as the first time, but I definitely still enjoy the games.

patchwork ,

Skyrim, grab a few new mods and the game is practically new to be again!

limeaide OP ,

I’ve played Skyrim for over 500 hours but I’ve never played mods. Which ones are your favorite?

patchwork ,

I’m pretty lame and just run USSEP, Cutting Room Floor, SMIM, Immersive Citizens, Alt Start, Rich Merchants, etc… When I try to go nuts with Mods I spend all my time modding and never actually get into the game. I wish I could find some community advice on minimal mods. When I “used to” look on the skyrimmods reddit most ppl seemed more interested in how many mods they could get, like quantity over quality.

limeaide OP ,

Yeah that’s kinda what kept me from modding skyrim.

I looked into it, but i would mostly find videos with titles like, “MOST BEAUTIFUL IMMERSIVE 400 MOD LIST” and i would try it but by the time i was in mod like 50 i couldn’t even launch the game anymore and i was too lazy to troubleshoot that much lol

n3trunn3r ,

For me it’s probably “Golden Sun” from GBA (and “Golden Sun 2”). I played them at the time on the original GBA at least 3 times each, and on emulators in phones & tablets a few more. I liked the story, the graphics, the combat system, the endless possibilities you could do, the discoverability, hidden corners, the different regions, the global map… If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend it, it’s full of nice things.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

gaydarless ,
  • Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age: Inquisition are both games I’ve played through and loved multiple times over
  • Skyrim lol but it’s infrequent for me now
  • Civ (I’ve only played 6)
olafurp ,

I just started Witcher 3. It’s great and has very good low graphics mode.

Slay the Spire. It’s so challenging that it’s always engaging when I play it.

sadie_sorceress ,

Didn’t even consider this one because I never left it. Having it on mobile means I’m playing it in way too many situations I shouldn’t be.

akinhet ,

THERES A MOBILE VERSION OF SLAY THE SPIRE???

avattar ,

Looks like somebody’s day just got made. Hope you didn’t have anything important to do today.

Lmao, yeah, I just downloaded it. Find myself playing it waaaaay too often now

Apeeksiht ,

Hades

limeaide OP ,

I recently picked it up for my switch and I’m really excited to try it out. I’ve heard a lot of great things about it

Apeeksiht ,

It’s a great game to kill time, each play through is random so doesn’t feel repetitive. Great soundtracks. I’m playing this on my laptop through a ps5 controller honestly this game is best to be played on a switch or steamdeck type device. Anyway happy gaming.

Serdan ,

I’m pretty hyped for the sequel.

Kerandir ,

Wow there is a sequel? Great!

ricecooker ,

Highly recommend; it’s on my list. It’s a low-barrier roguelike to get into. Overall, the genre has some friction points, but this game is really smart about it. There is a story! It is advanced every time you die. You slowly get more stats each time also. However, If the game determines you are dying ‘a lot’, it will allow you to decrease the difficulty so you won’t abandon the game. The fun is in combining Greek god powers; you can ‘git gud’ if you want a challenge, but it’s not necessary to ‘have fun.’

Nemo ,
  • Dwarf Fortress
  • Minecraft
  • Stardew Valley
  • Chrono Trigger
  • FF Tactics Advance
  • various Zelda titles
  • various roguelikes
ricecooker ,

This is my kind of list! Dwarf Fortress though…I haven’t played. Slightly intimidated by it. Sorta drawing from my experience with Rimworld. I really wanted to like it but I was so shit at the game.

Nemo ,

The problem with DF isn’t the learning curve, it’s how easy it is to play for sixteen hours without eating or sleeping.

limeaide OP ,

Same. People gush over how complex it is all the time, and it just makes me feel like I will be too stupid to understand it lol. I’m sure I could with enough time, but time is what I lack

archon ,

various roguelikes

Noita is one I’ve spent a lot of hours with.

Caves of Qud is a good one if you like “classic” roguelikes.

Kerandir ,

Ff tactics!!! What great memories! It’s in my myoomini plus next in row to be played! I’m currently re playing hp for the gbc

UnPassive ,

Since setting up emulation on my steam deck, I’ve been playing way too much SSX tricky…

Bronzie ,

Man I still listen to music from SSX 3.
So many great memories from that game.

archon ,

SSX is probably the only snowboarding game I’ve played/enjoyed. Great announcer, music, tracks and tricks.

  • Banished

  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Fable 2 and 3
TheControlled ,

Metal Gear Solid 3.

So hype for the rerelease and the remake

PutangInaMo ,

Stardew valley. I stopped playing it earlier this year but picked it back up this week. I forgot I made a new game that went with joja instead of the community center and I feel disgusting playing it but I need to see how it shakes out lol

jballs ,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

I love me some Stardew. Have you tried out Dave the Diver? It’s got a similar quirky feel to it.

PutangInaMo ,

It looks so good!! Definitely gonna grab it on the next sale. Man these indie dev pixel budget games are so much better than the AAA ones.

h0rnman ,

I generally go back to the nostalgia-filled retro titles from the nes-psx eras or for a more modern experience I’ll lean into Mark of the Ninja, Guacamelee, or FTL. I’ve also put an embarrassing number of hours into the new Tomb Raider trilogy and Breath of the Wild. BotW counts as vintage these days, right?

limeaide OP ,

I started a play through of Tomb Raider 2013 last night on my Steam Deck and I’ve been enjoying it so far. Controls feel a little clunky for me, but maybe that’s just because I suck at using controllers lol

I’ve heard a lot of great things about FTL and I have it on steam, but I don’t think I’ve ever opened it. Maybe I should start looking

h0rnman ,

It’s definitely the clunkiest of the 3. I almost gave up on it but if you stick with it you’ll figure it out and maybe even learn to like it. RotTR and SotTR are both much better from a control perspective. FTL is great for when you just want a chill game. It’s hard but not sweaty. I really wish they had it for Android…

Shenmue and Shenmue II are probably the games I’ve played the most over the years.

Then it’s on to the Telltale series of games and especially The Wolf Among Us.

In general I’m more of a “play lots but complete few” person.

limeaide OP ,

I’ve been wanting to find a time to play some Telltale games with my girlfriend. Which ones are your favorites?

The Walking Dead ones look interesting to me.

B0NK3RS ,
@B0NK3RS@lemmy.world avatar

I love TWAU and TWD season 1 but really they are all very good.

SeaJ ,

I agree with your suggestions but would not say they are all great. Some of them dropped having decisions affect the story which was kind of the whole draw.
