Don’t feed the troll. That’s the same guy who recently asked how actors deal with turning evil after having played evil roles, as if it was something that automatically happens.

They’ve been at this all day on a number of posts.

Don’t engage in this thread folks. This user has been trolling all day.

Oh hello mr “I really like science but I don’t actually know diddly about science”.

UncleBadTouch ,
@UncleBadTouch@lemmy.ca avatar

when you ask: “Why is science better than the alternative? (And what is that alternative, exactly?)” people will treat you like the child you really seem to be

froghorse OP ,

Really?

Science is better than the alternative because it delivers higher quality models. But that’s just my opinion.

Alternatives to science are tradition, consensus, authority, personal experience. But there might be others.

There you go Einstein.

BURN ,

No they are not. It’s been explained to you plenty, you’re just intentionally being obtuse.

froghorse OP ,

And yet you offer no actual argument. Hmmm.

BURN ,

Except we did. You just ignored everything that doesn’t fit the pinhole of your worldview.

Science does not have alternatives. Science describes the natural order of the world in quantifiable, repeatable ways.

Religion, tradition, consensus and all your other bullshit all rely on human information, which are not reliable sources of truth. The only way to prove something is to observe, document and then have others verify, which is also known as the scientific process.

Edit: As soon as someone gives him an argument he stops relying. What do you know

froghorse OP ,

Science is a method for getting knowledge. We have other methods for getting knowledge too. All have their pros and cons.

An advantage of science is that it delivers knowledge of high quality.

An advantage of authority is that it is convenient.

An advantage of personal experience is that it is not limited to abstraction.

There are other advantages, no doubt. And other methods.

The subject under discussion is called Epistemology. The philosophy of knowledge.

It isn’t as scary as it sounds.

BURN ,

Literally none of that has to do with science. None have pros.

Science is based in objective fact. Not “high quality knowledge”.

Who the fuck cares if it’s convenient? That doesn’t mean it’s right.

Again, who cares if it’s abstracted? Personal experience is incredibly unreliable and no true conclusions can be made based on it.

You’re conflating science with knowledge, which is not true. Science is the presentation of knowledge based on objective fact in the world around us that is also backed up by other scientists conducting the same experimentation process to obtain the same results. Science is a representation of the world around us in a verifiable way.

so, if you are such a big brain, why would you ask a question you already know the answer to? Oh, because your smooth brain thinks this is reddit and you think you are a good troll. sadly, you are just a pathetic excuse of a troll. learn more before you attempt again, then you wont look stupid to the whole world, and its now forever, so you can look back on this in a few years and cringe like all of us are at this moment. good luck wannabe troll

froghorse OP ,

Because I want alternative takes on the subject. Because I want to discuss it. Because the subject interests me. That’s what big brains do.

jeffw ,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Alternative science? The fuck are you saying?

I feel like they’re just out to prove the name of this community wrong. They’re doing a great job!

Xylinna ,

Is this referencing actually children being in charge? Such as a school activity or a family activity? Or are we talking about politics?

froghorse OP ,

I’m talking about conversation here on social media. Where anything that strays too far from the mainstream (where adults are often inclined to wander) is labelled trollish.

match ,

Adults tend to value credibility. Consider starting over from a blank slate.

Check the other posts that user has made so far, and their reactions in the comment sections. Definitely a troll.

BURN ,

Definitely a troll, probably politically motivated if you check their previous posts

Sibbo ,

If the children are small, they don’t understand anyways. If they are larger, a babysitter may be the best option.

BlameThePeacock ,

I don’t think the question refers to literal children.

Getting trump a babysitter would be hilarious though.

froghorse OP ,

But who babysits the babysitter?

alehc ,

Wat

jet ,

Spell the topics so the children don’t understand it, or speak of it using obtuse and oblique language.

froghorse OP ,

Ahhh. I believe that technique was employed in the middle ages when the children were burning adults at the stake. Frame your forbidden discourse in allegorical terms. Homunculi and philosopher’s stones.

jet ,

or use pop culture references that predate the children. Shaka, when the walls fell!

froghorse OP ,

Nice :)
