There are a few definitions but the west more often refers to the word as simply meaning “holy war”. In Arabic terms the word can be broken down into Greater, the Lesser and the intellectual, it gets a bit more complicated and simply the “holy war” translation does not fully capture the complexity and nuances of the term.
