F-35 crash: Pilot called 911 after parachuting into backyard

The pilot of a US Marines F-35 jet that went missing called emergency services from a South Carolina home where his parachute landed.

In audio from the call, obtained by the BBC, the pilot told a dispatcher that he was “not sure” where his $100m (£80m) plane was.

A local resident can also be heard calmly explaining that the pilot had landed in his backyard.

Debris from the jet was discovered on Monday, a day after it went missing.

In the four-minute call to the 911 emergency number, the resident of a North Charleston home can be heard telling a confused dispatcher that “we got a pilot in the house”.

“I guess he landed in my backyard,” the resident added. “We’re trying to see if we could get an ambulance to the house, please”.

YouTube has more of the audio. Comments there pretty harsh on the dispatcher. She is going through an EMD script for medical response (guarantee it’s for a “fall”) and has to ask specific questions even if they don’t apply. It’s a liability thing for her and her agency, and leaving the script can get her written up.

Might have gone with an aircraft crash response, but that is also going to send a ton of vehicles to… a house with a pilot with an achy back but no airplane.

Where could I find more information about this? Like actual scripts and responses for different scenarios.

I never thought about this before, but of course it’s the correct way to manage emergencies.

Quite fascinating.

Edit: here’s something neat

bradorsomething ,

Do you mean EMD cards?

PetDinosaurs ,

I don’t know what I mean. That’s what I’m asking.

I want to know more about how first responders do things.

If they’re following a protocol even when something as odd as this happens, I’d like to know what the protocols are

There are lots of standardized card sets, mostly digital now. Here is New Jersey’s standardized cards: www.nj.gov/911/…/EMD Guidecards 2020 Final.pdf

You’d think an area like North Charleston, which has an active Air Force base right next door, would have planned for an emergency of this type.

MisterChief ,

For how absurd the situation is, everyone involved is ridiculously calm.
