You’re right that it probably doesn’t matter much for long-term investors, though it might affect the election, as people’s perception of the state of the economy has a disproportionate-to-actual-effect impact on how they evaluate a presidential administration.

I’d say if things were still trending downward by the election that would be true, but that’s a very long time in terms of the stock market.
