US bolsters military presence in Middle East as threat of regional escalation intensifies

The US military will deploy additional fighter jets and navy warships to the Middle East, the Pentagon said on Friday, as Washington braces for Iran and its regional allies to make good on a promise to respond to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

After the back-to-back assassinations of Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday and top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut the evening before, international diplomats have scrambled to head off a full-fledged regional war. Rising tensions have spurred a growing list of major airlines into cancelling flights to Tel Aviv or Beirut, including Lufthansa, Delta and Air India.

On Friday France urged its citizens to leave Iran and Cyprus said it had expanded plans to support a large-scale evacuation from the region if the war expands. The island nation helped tens of thousands of people leave during the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

The US defence secretary, Lloyd Austin, approved sending the additional Navy cruisers and destroyers – which can shoot down ballistic missiles – to the Middle East and Europe on Friday and the US will also send an additional squadron of fighter jets to the Middle East.

Maybe instead, Israel trying to provoke WWIII means we should get out of the area.

SparrowRanjitScaur ,

Do you mean WW3?

Drusas ,

Bad autocorrect. Thanks.

some_guy ,

Let’s see, there’s a threat because why? Oh, Israel won’t respect the sovereignty of other nations? How we let them get away with this shit blows my mind.

SGGeorwell ,

So let me get this straight. The government that supposedly represents the most famous victims of ethno-nationalist violence in the 20th century grows up to become the most famous perpetrator of it in the 21st century? And one of their allies who helped defeat the original villains is now facilitating this new villainy? And because of our shared inability to admit this horrible irony we might just have a THIRD world war? Am I getting that straight?

Well, it HAS been about a generation since we invaded. Gotta do something with this overinflated budget.

What? No, we can’t afford Healthcare. Shut up.

looks sourly at reduced GIF color palette

This is 2024. That’s an encoding from the 1980s. Can Lemmy do better?

investigates

Apparently webm works. And it’s smaller.

EDIT: And upon further investigation, at least in the Lemmy Web UI, it scales up with the webpage and it lets the viewer choose whether to download the thing, for people on slow connections.

EDIT2: Though apparently on mbin, neither GIF nor webm files are shown inline; rather, the mbin web UI just links to them (though they’re both viewable in that environment via clicking through to view them).

One problem with the fediverse at the moment is there seems to be a wide variance in feature support between clients and servers so it’s nearly impossible to guarantee media (even static images, sometimes) will display as intended for everyone.

I don’t have a solution, just noting it. Though the webm you posted looks and works great for me, in Voyager on Android 🙌

checks Eternity on Android

Neither the GIF nor the webm shows as animated there, though you can see a thumbnail on both.

The GIF is absolutely tiny on my Android screen on Eternity, though. Looks like the same “GIFs display at 1:1” issue, but on a higher-res display there.

In voyager I literally see zero difference between yours or the previous commenters.

WindyRebel , (edited )

What?! I’m on Voyager and I see a big difference. The original is saturated in many shadows and has the effect you get when the picture isn’t quite coming through digitally while the movement is slightly janky. The response is crystal clear and smoother and the little brother in the background actually moves.

bobs_monkey ,

How about the kid on the left not moving at all in the first image?

WindyRebel ,

That’s exactly what I was referring to in my last line.
