DNC officials defend virtual roll call vote

The Democratic National Committee is forging ahead with a virtual roll call to pick the party’s presidential nominee, even as a steady stream of congressional Democrats called for Joe Biden to exit the race.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Leah Daughtry, co-chairs of the committee, along with DNC staff, argued that the virtual roll call vote is necessary to prevent any potential Republican-backed legal challenges for ballot access in Ohio. Former White House counsel Dana Remus, who is advising the DNC on the issue, called the virtual roll call the “wisest, most prudent course,” otherwise it would “[leave] the door open to a potential legal challenge and that’s a risk.”

“How significant of a risk? Well, it’s hard to say,” Remus said. “People certainly disagree, and reasonably disagree — but it is a risk, and if we can avoid it, we should.”

I’m not sure I agree, but it’s reasonable to not trust this law. People who think any Republican threat will result in automatic loss are a bit much, but this one has some active questions that make it dangerous to rely on.

That all said, it’s great that they’re only just now deciding we should avoid giving Republicans power over ballot access. They should have thought about this when they planned the convention for after the original due date.

“we’d rather definitely lose the election than maybe lose in court.”

I mean wtf happens if there are court cases? Do they just get to decide that there is no opponent to trump and he just wins by default?

Given this supreme court, probably

It’s not even about the presidential election. The Democratic candidate (whoever they are) will lose Ohio. But having a presidential candidate on the ballot is likely to motivate people to go vote, and there’s a very tight senate race going on there.
