Arizona senate passes repeal of 1864 near-total abortion ban

Democrats pick up support of two Republicans to repeal law reinstated three weeks ago, with governor expected to ratify repeal

Arizona lawmakers have repealed the state’s 160-year-old statute banning nearly all abortions.

The 1864 law, which was reinstated by the state supreme court three weeks ago, has made abortion a central focus in the battleground state and galvanized Democrats seeking to enshrine abortion rights.

In the state senate, Democrats picked up the support of two Republicans in favor of repealing the ban. The Democratic governor, Katie Hobbs, is expected to ratify the repeal, which narrowly cleared the Arizona house last week after three Republicans joined with all the Democrats in the chamber.

See? Both sides are the same.

SPRUNT ,

Here, you forgot this: /s

I don't like spoiling the joke with an explanation. "Both sides" people are real, but it is extremely obvious in this case that the sides aren't the same.

I assume the downvotes are from people who knew it was a joke but didn't find it funny. I'm fine with that.

SPRUNT ,

I used to think that obvious things were obvious, but then “alternate facts” happened and I realized that obvious doesn’t seem to matter anymore.

MacAttak8 ,

IMHO when objective truths became “fake news” and “alternative facts” became the truth for so so many people, our slide into facist movements became a free fall.

bradorsomething ,

I support your view that the joke is obvious, but the stupid has ruined it for both of us.

My understanding is those few conservatives voted to repeal this bill to kill the movement to have reproductive health rights enshrined in the state constitution.

“But Ms. Bolick also railed against Planned Parenthood and Democratic support for abortion rights. She argued that her vote to repeal the 1864 ban could be Arizona’s best shot at curbing the momentum behind a proposed ballot measure to enshrine abortion protections in the state constitution.”

Still voting on it in November. AZ going bluuuue!!!💙💙

MacAttak8 ,

Relieved to hear it’s going to the ballot! I have faith in my AZ brethren.

14 Republicans voted for the total abortion ban and only 2 crossed the aisle.

28 Republicans in the house voted for the total abortion ban. Only 3 crossed the aisle.

This was a much closer vote than it should have been.

Just imagine how much progress we’ll make in another 160 years, could even double those kinds of margins

You’re assuming Democrats will vote. Republicans never miss. They live for bureaucracy.

I’ve not looked into who voted against the ban, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was calculated to make those Republicans look good for election, with the others being in safer areas where they can say they stuck it to the libs.
