a car driven by a 15-year-old boy struck her as she walked from school to a library

why is the city on the hook for this one? are they supposed to just let car thieves drive away?

Not_mikey ,

Yeah, police chases are incredibly dangerous and should only be used to prevent a criminal from doing something even more dangerous. Stealing cars is bad but it’s still just property and we shouldn’t be putting that much risk on the public to protect someone’s property.

Kalothar ,

Because of collateral damage being greater than the value of the car. It makes no sense to chase if it puts other pedestrians in danger, now they can just find them and then arrest them later.

Bluefalcon ,

Yes. Most police chases end in a wreck. Almost 30% of the time innocent people are killed. That’s not including the officers or passengers in the fleeing car. Over half of all chases are non-violent crimes. Also this police force has a pretty dark history of bad choices.
