Not to sound cynical, but didn’t the US military train the Afghan military too, only to collapse entirely under Taliban assault?

I’m not sure Mexico is getting the best deal here.

Wasn't US training that failed the Afghan military. Coalition-trained Afghan special forces often performed well. The Afghan military's problems were... numerous. Ghost soldiers, low control of units by the national government, rampant drug use, regional loyalties, poor morale, low pay, etc etc etc etc.

Some, but there are two things here to consider:

  1. Not NEARLY on the level of Afghanistan. It's hard to overstate just how little control the government had, or how little of a 'nation' there was.
  2. US training isn't going to make their problems worse, so there's little reason not to accept, other than domestic political concerns.

In many ways it failed in Ukraine as well. Our tactics are/were created for our military, with our firepower and assume air superiority. That does not exist in Ukraine. Our methods were getting their fighters killed, so they adapted and devised their own.

But it is in our best interest to help Mexico.

Afghanistan and Mexico are not comparable nations in any way, socially.
