What’s the conversion rate for lakh? They killed this guy because his dad couldn’t provide 10 lakh. If that’s like $20 WTF?

The story says they killed him after the dad tried to give them 3 lakh and they took 20k (!) instead and thought they’d be caught, but she says they killed him before any money was exchanged. What a waste.

SheeEttin ,

Indian numbering is complicated. 10 lakh of something is one million of that thing. 1m INR is about 12k USD.

radioactiveradio OP ,

Basically a million in international counting system, I think.

chowder ,

10 lakh is just shy of $14k usd

Halosheep ,

It’s like $25,000 USD. Seems like a really small amount of debt to kill someone over…

radioactiveradio OP ,

It’s pretty significant here. Conversion rates and all. Still money over someone’s life is a no no.

SkepticalButOpenMinded ,

The average annual income in India is apparently 2 lakhs, so 21 lakhs is definitely significant. After accounting for purchasing power parity, I’d reckon it “feels like” hundreds of thousands USD.
