Why is this a news article? Why is this posted to this community? It’s a well written article, but it carries no new news, and is just an article by the author of a book that’s about to go on sale.
Technically at&t doesn’t own DirecTV anymore but they do have a big share, and DirecTV still uses a lot of their back-end tools. Probably support infra too?
Marc Rebillet and Thundercat had sets too, plus Hamilton Morris was going to give a lecture. The line up was pretty stacked overall and early bird tickets were $250, which isn’t unreasonable for a 3 day festival.
The lineup was pretty solid, especially if you look at the full lineup, but that price is a bit much for a single day festival.
We just keep getting fucked. I paid 160 for bonnaroo 2006 tickets because I got the first wave, I think the final wave was 190. That’s with fees and all. Adjusted for inflation thats $250-290. But that was a 4 day festival with Radiohead headlining, beck, tom petty, god tons of sick bands. It was imo the peak of bonnaroo
Now this is $300 for a single day? It’s more after inflation for 1/4 the festival? I get that there’s savings in running a festival for multiple days so it’s not like cutting a 3 day to a 1 day means costs are cut by 2/3rd, but from my perspective as a consumer it looks like I am paying ~300% more than I did 18 years ago even after adjusting for inflation because I just don’t get nearly as much value for my dollars.
I remember that bonnaroo and being like “Jesus this is so much money” and here we are with a show that’s 53% more expensive in raw dollar amount and 1/4 the length. Sigh.
Was worth it though, that Radiohead set was insane. They played for over 2 hours. Also a few months later I got tickets for daft punks alive 2007 tour - $50 plus fees (which were like $14). At the time I thought it was the most absurd shit, so expensive. I almost didn’t go. I’m glad I did because it was the most insane concert I’ve ever seen in my life. But it’s funny because nowadays finding a major act that puts out tickets for $65 with fees is actually fairly tough.
Being called a radical for wanting equality for everyone and justice for the marginalized and disadvantaged. The sociopathic, greedy robber barons and their sycophants are the real radicals.
Most people claim to want to see children succeed.
There are hungry children in many developed countries. This is not treated as an emergency.
Inequality affects children hugely. Education, employment, health (especially mental health). The status quo is preferred, because it benefits a tiny minority of very rich people. Those who shout loudest blame queers, feminists, and immigrants. I grew up in extreme poverty (top 5% of most deprived areas in my country), and a majority of the poor people I live with believe this bullshit to some extent.
Acknowledging this is not being ‘radicalised’. It’s just being objective. People do not want to make the world better for people.
Nowadays people use radical in political terms as another word for extremist, but it used to mean going to the root causes. Equality and justice, or the lack of, are the root of many political issues. So you are radical in a way, but that is good.
Canadian police proved they can be every bit as vicious, and monstrous as American cops the day, and to this day, not a single meaningful consequence was seen in regards to all the human rights violations committed by police.
It’s so annoying really, DirecTV has honestly done a good job to try and keep all these conflicts away from their customers. Linear is dying, they are trying to keep it functional while they can.
All these channels (broadcast especially) try to ask for a bigger cut, which leads to customer bill increases. Broadcast shouldn’t even be allowed to, because they get access to public-owned radio spectrum to provide a public service and make some money when that public service isn’t needed.
DirecTV retransmitting those channels specifically does nothing but help the broadcast station reach an audience that otherwise wouldn’t. (Especially in locations like the Intermountain West.) They should be thankful for it, not charge for it, nor be allowed to. The retransmit literally costs them nothing and reaps them free ad dollars.
Linear will likely be replaced with the clusterfuck that streaming TV now is, DirecTV will eventually have to pivot or die.
Not trying to sound like an apologist nor a fanboi, but as far as companies go, DTV has been more flexible than most streamers (their stream arm anyway.) However, they’re just going to continue to have these battles until companies like Disney can pull their channels and get people to pay for all their silly apps directly.
It is a bummer on some level, the end of Linear is kinda nice. Unlimited cloud DVR, fast forward through commercials, all your content in one place.
Can’t wait to see the “underground” Android VM with all the TV apps baked in to present a unified UI like Linear, hah. Like Pidgin for TV.
There was this company Aereo that offered the ability to rent individual antennas in your local market and stream that over the Internet and the supreme court killed that too.
And they ruled Aereo was a cable company on the one hand so it was violating the law by not paying carriage fees…And then later when Aereo sought a compulsory license because it was a “cable company” according to the supreme court - they ruled against Aereo because it’s not a cable company.
It’s pretty obvious the public service part of OTA comes in second behind profit.
Meanwhile I was stuck with burners while driving back from the store today... Is it just marketing? Although I guess burning man didn't sell so well, either.
This article has sooo much being said between the lines.
The mother, Rachel Pickrel-Hawkins, said the reunification therapy by Christine Bassett, a licensed marriage and family therapist, has been harmful, abusive and counterproductive
When the other party is there perpetrator of abuse and the one with power, it very often is detrimental to have some sort of mediation or therapy/counseling. Because the abusers very often are able to manipulate the story so they are the victims in need of most support/compromise/thoughtfulness/time/money/basically ANY conceivable resource in life and relationships they will exploit.
Now I admit I am more familiar with the medical side of things but this entire dynamic gives me pause because it is so psych 101.
This just hurts. A whole loving family being thrown under the bus to protect one cop. Therapist sounds like a piece of work too, there should never be unwanted physical contact during therapy. Evil.
