ConfuzedAZ , in Global food prices rise after Russia ends grain deal and India restricts rice exports

Being slightly ignorant to the politics of this, what is motivation for Russia to do this? I realize it will harm Ukraine financially, but will that really affect Ukraine’s war machine as it’s dependent on Western support already? Won’t this just galvanize the West to continue to support Ukraine to re-establish grain shipments?

    It’s their only hope: starve enough people for a peace settlement that favors them (keeping what they have)

    Slowly losing their Black Sea fleet and slowly losing ground is not great for Russia.

    Drusas ,

    In addition, it gives Russia leverage over countries that have been dependent on Ukrainian grain. Russia is trying to get them to depend now on cheap Russian grain.

    Aux ,

    Global famine starts. People run to Europe. Europe lifts sanctions and stops sending arms to Ukraine. Ukraine becomes part of Russia. Grain gets sent again.

    cornercase , in White ex-officers in Mississippi plead guilty to racist assault on 2 Black men during raid

    “This is the most horrible incident of police brutality I’ve learned of over my whole career, and I’m ashamed it happened at this department,” Bailey said.

    Liar. There's no way you have six deputies—forming a "Goon Squad"—and not have some idea of their depravity. Bailey is probably ashamed it went this far and got exposed. He probably thinks it'd be better if the deputies just had a bit of chill when brutalizing uppity Black people on the wrong side of the river. He's ashamed of their sloppiness.

    And he'll probably win re-election by 87% again...

    MasterObee , in Gay Louisiana doctor says he’s leaving the state over its ‘discriminatory’ legislation

    Last month the Republican-dominated Legislature overturned his veto of a bill that will ban transition-related medical care, including puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgery, **for minors starting Jan. 1, 2024. **

    I don’t know if gender transitioning surgeries for minors is a reason to dislike a state. Seems to say more about this guys morals that he’s pro-life altering surgery for minors.

    Doesn’t surprise me at all. I am sure it has been analyzed to death, but I always assumed it was due to most people getting their dopamine hits from the “inner world” of the internet instead of the “outer world” we all live in. I spent years playing video games and masterbating to pornhub videos. It’s not that I didn’t want to find a girlfriend. I just never left the house or had the drive to do so until I stopped focusing so much on the inner world.

    MicroWave OP , in Ocean surface hits highest ever recorded temperature and set to rise further
    @MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

    Marine heatwaves are becoming more numerous, a 2019 study found, with the number of heatwave days having tripled in the past couple of years studied. The number of heatwave days rose by more than 50% in the 30 years to 2016, compared with 1925-54. Scientists said at the time the heat destroyed swathes of sealife “like wildfires take out huge areas of forest”.

    rapscallion , in AP: How rogue Mississippi officers tried to cover up their torture of 2 Black men

    Christ, this is almost Emmett Till-level vileness. How many times has this Goon Squad done Klan shit before without quite going “too far” and gotten away with it?

    Fapper_McFapper , in White ex-officers in Mississippi plead guilty to racist assault on 2 Black men during raid

    Jackson Mississippi, shame on you.

    The officers, who are all white, entered a house without a warrant on Jan. 24, assaulting the men with a sex toy and using stun guns and other objects to abuse them over a roughly 90-minute period, court documents show. After one victim was shot and wounded in a “mock execution” that went awry, documents say the officers conspired to plant and tamper with evidence instead of providing medical aid.

    gifferqqq , in Infant RSV shot wins backing of CDC advisors, paving way for fall availability
    @gifferqqq@kbin.social avatar

    Note that this is a monoclonal antibody injection and not a vaccine. This means that it will be way more expensive and protection will only last a few months at most. This is still a good thing for that are young and don't mount great immune responses, but an actual vaccine approved for this age group is still needed.

    frenchdresses ,

    So does that mean that you should wait until the baby catches RSV before injection?

    Will the baby’s immune system not learn how to fight RSV then?

    gifferqqq ,
    @gifferqqq@kbin.social avatar

    No this drug is actually approved for prevention and not treatment.

    It probably would reduce the chance they would get sick and get natural immunity. However a RSV vaccine for infants is hopefully not far off so they can gain immunity that way.

    2d4_bears , in AP: How rogue Mississippi officers tried to cover up their torture of 2 Black men

    “rogue”, implying that this attitude and behavior is not actively reinforced by police training and culture.

    NotYourSocialWorker , in Millions of older workers are nearing retirement with nothing saved

    That’s a stunning reversal for millions of households during a 12-year period that included economic growth and huge stock gains following the end of the Great Recession.

    Wow, it’s almost as if most people don’t get any gains from the stock market booming… /s

    For most people a strong stock market only mean, in best case, that they don’t lose their jobs. It doesn’t have any real positive effect on their wages. When it goes well for companies we’re told to not ask for too high salary due to inflation. In hard times were told not to ask for too much to save our jobs.

    The only time we get an increase in salaries is when there’s either a lack of skilled workers or when we create an artificial lack of skilled workers through unions and strikes.

    visak , in 16-year-old Chick-Fil-A worker sent home over ‘unnatural’ hair color

    I have interviewed probably a thousand people, hired and managed many teams, though not retail I have to admit. I have had precisely one conversation about hair in all of that time. I was interviewing a guy who had a very large number of thick braids. I said, “the job sometimes requires wearing a hardhat. Is that a problem?” He said no, that he did it all the time, he just needed to tie them back. I should emphasize this dude had a truly impressive amount of hair so I really did doubt he could get it in a hat, but I hired him and he did.

    I’ve also had to have conversations about long nails and body odor. It’s not comfortable, but we should not be afraid of these topics ONLY if they are directly relevant to the job. I see nothing in this story where her hair interfered with the job, unless the job is pleasing bigots. Oh.
