DA, the one half way decent platform. XD

Khotetsu ,

Tumblr, too, once upon a time. Started out as a side project built by a guy and a programmer from his company he paid to help him. He hated social media sites like Facebook and wanted to build a social media site that he would enjoy using. Someplace where he could post his photos and follow people he liked so he could see their content, and that was it.

TimeNaan ,

And now its a massive data-grabbing corpo. What an inspiring story.

Khotetsu ,

I dunno if I’d call it a massive corporation now. Data grabbing? Most likely, it’s got ads at the very least, so it’s got ad metrics. But it’s owned by the same people who own WordPress now.

Honestly, the best part of modern Tumblr is that the creator sold it to Yahoo for just over $1 billion, and then Verizon sold it for less than $3 million 6 years later. They tried to monetize it, royally screwed themselves in the process, and ended up selling it for less than .3% of what Yahoo bought it for in the first place.

The original owner took his money from the sale, disappeared from public life, and only pops up occasionally when he makes a donation to some charity or another. All while Verizon gave themselves hemorrhoids trying to make it into another data-grabbing social media blackhole like Twitter X or Facebook.

There were plenty of people with blue hair lmao what are you on

Or are you using blue hair as an alt right dogwhistle?

ah yes, scene/emo, a subculture famously known for not having dyed hair

thecoolowl , in Youtube Premium

I use YouTube the most of all streaming services. Yet I don’t understand why there isn’t an affordable easy to use option, that includes no ads and a high CPM for creators.

My understanding is YouTube premium, doesn’t highten the payout to creators, but rather just substitutes the dirt poor ad revenue per impression.

shanghaibebop ,

It actually does get higher revenue for content creators for the majority of your creators. Average per view is something like 5-10x vs non premium views.

It’s based around your watch time and something like 50%? of your subscription split across the channels you watch.

Ad impressions pay very little on YouTube.

iAmTheTot ,
@iAmTheTot@kbin.social avatar

You're misinformed. I watch many creators who have said in their own words that Premium subscriber views make more money for them.

I actually have no good enough reason to switch to an app, the web app is more than good although text formatting doesn’t work probably using Firefox but it works using nu.lemdro.id which lacks the option to easily use and format text

nexussapphire , in I like a good UX

What is the benefit over the other options. All I’ve heard is the animations are smooth and liftoff seems smooth enough to me.

Rossel ,

It has a ton of features and polish, and the UX is very good. Mainly that, value is subjective, but I’m willing to pay the dev for a good app.

GarytheSnail ,
@GarytheSnail@programming.dev avatar

Familiarity. I think that tops the chart for a lot of people.

nexussapphire ,

I think we all do it at times. It’s cool to see some of them curious about other apps though.

sudostartx ,

Personally, the thing that the other apps don’t do right yet, is the layout on big screens. On a foldable or a tablet Sync looks way better than the rest and I have tried them almost all. Connect is the closest one on a regular phone.

limerod ,

Multi windows, ability to cache comments are the biggest ones at least for me. Imagine desktop class multi tasking and not having your comments/posts reload because you were low on ram, etc. Smoothness is subject and I find other clients like Jerboa more smoother overall.

nexussapphire ,

Multi window sounds neat, haven’t had issues with ram yet. I always get a flagship device and use it till I don’t get security patches anymore or until my device slows down too much.

Liftoff is pretty good. Has need a lot of updates in the time I’ve used it

corm ,

Liftoff freaking rules. I can view /m/all, true ALL, not related to my instance, and I can comment on any post by having a few lemmy accounts (sopuli.xyz main, lemm.ee covers most everything else, plus beehaw).

Liftoff is the only one I know of that plays nice with multiple accounts and the whole fediverse
