Honestly? I think a big issue with getting more people over here is kinda the attitude. This place is really elitist and condescending when the real reason go to threads or stick to twitter is cause

  1. Thats where their friends are
  2. The sign up+finding communities process is way more intuitive and 3) Folks over here shit on them a lot

I like it here, its been my prefered site, but between the stale memes and elitism the Fediverse has been like the Linux of social media. Probably better, but not really worth it for the average user.

Like, I know that wont win me any friends, but it’s the truth. People are usually going to go the path of least resistance, and Lemmy instances being confusing to navigate for an average user, or looking at Mastodon.world and seeing they banned shitposts and not understanding that they can use a different one or spin up their own is going to turn people away.

If you want a more niche userbase that’s fine, I certainly do, but it’s wild to insult them for being stupid for not joining while actively keeping them away lol

This place is really elitist

Folks over here shit on them a lot

I feel called out. And I can’t even try and defend myself, if I’m being honest, best I could do is try to defend my elitist point of view, that people who don’t want to bother putting the slightest bit of effort really don’t have much to do here. There’s also the problem that instances can only grow so much before their home servers get strained with traffic and hosting costs soar.

In a way, we are and will remain the linux of social platforms. Small, vocal, divided by the pettiest reasons and annoying to no end to “the normies”

The truck is not to tell them all the complicated shit. Just tell them it’s another social media site that you browse. Don’t need to tell them about the fediverse. Don’t need to tell them it’s independent. All that stuff is like a Naruto headband is to girls.

They’ll discover all that stuff afterwards.

Well was he? I hate it when they don’t let us know the outcome.

Is there a hydrohomies community here?

We are hydrohomies now. People of culture 🧐

drathvedro , in Reddit moment!

I’ve mainly used Reddit on PC and only used apps for porn (because in-app autoplay is so much better). Them disabling NSFW from API completely makes it completely useless for latter. Really hoping lemmy becomes the new big thing where you can scroll, comment, and jerk off. Possibly at the same time.

Slight inaccuracy, the data only goes back to 1979 and has not yet been verified by NOAA which has data going back to 1880.

It’s also worth noting that this is based on the Climate Reanalyzer which is intended for forecasting temperatures, not record keeping.

It would be more accurate to say it was the hottest day ever recorded by the Climate Reanalyzer.

bric ,

This. It’s also not accurate to say it’s the warmest we’ve been in the past 10,000 years, it was likely warmer during the roman warm period, and potentially a couple of other points. So we can only really say it’s the warmest we’ve seen in the last couple hundred years.

That’s not to say this isn’t concerning, we’re on track to smash the roman warm periods average temperatures within our lifetimes and make the earth the hottest it’s been since the paleoscene, which would have massive ramifications. But we’re not there yet, the problem is that we will likely get there in the next few decades.

Watching this whole thing go down has made me realize that regardless of what people say, it's not about the number of people, the quality of the experience, or anything like that.

A lot of people actually want to be surrounded by "brands" and "influencers". Some people even get a kick out of "hate following" people who they don't like, which blows my mind.

That's why Threads feels so right to them. Threads has been designed for one thing, and one thing only: connecting companies to customers, often via influencers and eventually through traditional advertising.

Does not work very well. Raising pat only works for about 6 to 8 months. Then you need another raise. So to stay truly happy and productive, more elements need to be introduced to the equation.

Don't get me wrong, fuck nestle, but this whole movement that's grown singling them out is so superficial it really frustrates me.
All of the companies of nestle's size are up to the exact same shit. They all exploit their employees, destroy the planet, and invest millions if not billions in union busting and lobbying.
I get that it's easier just to focus on one company, but if you want one thing to focus on, make it capitalism, the system that enables, hell, encourages, this shit, rather than individual products of it.
Even if the movement somehow managed to destroy nestle (never going to happen), destroying one company achieves nothing. Tear the whole thing down.

EndOfLine ,

While I understand your perspective, you failed to mention their actions which specifically targeted new mothers in developing countries with unethical actions that resulted in the slow deaths of infants.

This is why I boycott Nestlé. Not poor treatment of employees, nor a disregard for the environment.

Nestlé implemented a plan that caused babies to die a slow and painful death while their mothers could only watch helplessly.

Fuck Nestlé.

There are 1 billion active users on Instagram and those users were invited to Threads using an existing account. Celebrities, businesses, streamers, etc. all popped up on Threads within the first few hours of public release.

I’m a big nerd and just learned about the fediverse within recent months. Everyone else I know who uses Twitter and Threads have no clue what Mastodon is.

ProfezzorDarke ,

Even my tech savvy best friend has no fucking clue

CoderKat ,

Yeah, it’s unfathomable how huge Instagram is. That’s a massive number of people who could be easily informed “hey, wanna try our new product?” As an aside, when I googled it, it said there was 2 billion active Instagram users.

I find it silly when people act skeptical of Threads’ numbers, since Meta only needed a tiny number of their existing user base to try it out.

Lockszmith ,

There was a time - when facebook/ig didn’t exist, the difference was - back then nothing exists, and so the intriguing new thing (that didn’t make money yet), was buggy as hell, and so the spread was FAST.

Thankfully, those big projects, whenever they make a mistake, the fediverse gets a boost.

I’ve been following the fediverse since disapora announced their plans circa 2010. I created an account on one of the instances in 2012 and probably visited it twice since.

It’s one thing to be early adopters when something is completely new compared to something that comes to replace something that everybody is already using.

We’ll get there. With every mistake these big corps will do, we’ll get more and more people in, until THIS will become the ‘cool’ thing around.

Until then, it will be much much better.

vd1n , in Is threads bad? Yes. But Elon being knocked down a peg or two is worth it.

I don’t know how I feel about that. They both deserve to be treated like cartel criminals. NOTHING LESS.

You gotta realize criminals and street life is the same as the mainstream. Please trust me.
