Eddie , in It's so nice to see them all growing, but this is just the truth, sorry.

Tbh, I think this whole thing is being blown out of proportion. Part of FOSS and the internet in general is the ability to have choice over what you use and spend your time with. Just because Sync is out, doesn’t mean you can’t continue to use your FOSS apps. It just means that we now have an option for people who want to pay for a very polished experience.

lhamil64 ,

I agree. Considering the backlash at reddit for nixing third party apps, you’d think people would praise all the options for Lemmy.

Juno ,

The reason I’m on lemmy is I WANT to use weird apps and see different things programmers do. It’s like the post is telling me just get taco bell when there’s a dude selling Mexican grandma style enchiladas out of a food truck and I can go over that corner restaurant and get some fire chimmi-chanagas.

I like weird stuff. So what about it? God damned people pushing some vanilla boring shit.

Eddie ,

Just ignore them? I don’t see your point here at all. If you don’t want to eat Taco bell, don’t eat it???

Juno ,

Right, I’m on a third lemmy app, just saying my 2cents. What’s the problem exactly ?

What’s going on?

empireOfLove ,

It’s a post from hexbear. It doesn’t mean anything.

OurToothbrush OP ,
  1. Looks at ridicously conservative and abridged list of US civilian casualties over the last century
  2. Notices that it is from a left wing source
  3. ???
  4. surely this has no informational value

It’s not even a meme and you’re in a meme subreddit dude. I am only exceptionally confused

I was excited to try Sync after all the hype (read: advertising) on Lemmy, saw that it had ads, and noped the fuck out.

You do you, but I’m not gonna use that kind of garbage. Ads don’t “keep apps accessible”. Instead, they poison your mind specifically and suck balls in general. The entire advertisement model is flawed, and certain kinds of people only put up with it because they don’t know better.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yup. I think apps should cost money. No ads. It’s the freemium model that creates all the bad things about our experience.

johnhamelink ,

Exactly. I have no problem with people trying to make money from software, but FOSS tools should be supported over proprietary ones wherever possible, and it’s nobodies fault that FOSS is often the better technical choice anyway. As someone with ADHD: fuck all ads, I demand a peaceful mind.

I get the sentiment here, but “opening doors” is a little more nuanced and complex than earning a college degree in a random subject.

I’ve seen people with PhDs unable to find work, and people with no degrees at the top of a company.

Life is interesting like that.

As I understand it Sync could charge for the app with a free software license, but wouldn’t be able to stop people copying or distributing it.

stappern ,

but wouldn’t be able to stop people copying or distributing it.

they still dont

Weren’t attitudes like this literally why Lenin thought that Communism had to be forced on a society for a few generations for the least educated to “understand” Communism? Since there was no breaking through their preconceived notions? Because there’s literally no reaching these people?
