I’ve recently gotten into this and it’s an amazingly detailed game with so many things to offer/handle it’s frankly overwhelming.

A native linux version is amazing and will def wait for the release as I’ve recently started a look run which is pretty good for me,given my limited experience.

This is great news! I have always wanted to try Dwarf Fortress but I know myself and I know from past experiences playing ASCII MUDs and rogue-likes that I don’t play them enough to memorize what the different symbols represent and that inevitably causes me to drop the game entirely out of frustration. It seems like a small thing, but having the graphical version of the game on Linux is a huge win to me.

DF works on Linux since the beginning.

The Lazy Newb Pack was always available for Linux and through Proton the Steam Pro Version also worked from day one and I never had issues.

It even works with DFhack.

Doesn’t look like so in the beta at least, it will always launch in an SDL window - and doesn’t link to the curses libs either, which makes some sense with it being a Steam game.
Though using dfhack and the remote interface could probably still be used to have a tty client.

TTY was great for multiplayer. Instead of handing the save file back and forth, we would just take turns on the server.

Dwarf Fortress now has a Linux Beta available on Steam, so you can get testing and see what all the fuss is about with this new version.

While it was already playable with Proton, we knew for a while that Bay 12 Games planned Native Linux support as well.

As they said in the Steam announcement “The Linux version is almost ready, and in about two weeks we will be looking for beta testers, after Tarn gets back from Germany… in fact, it’s already on the Public Beta Branch!”

Simply opt into the main Beta for it on Steam and you’ll be able to play and test it.

However, if you find you can’t get it because it keeps using Proton, you can select the Steam Linux Runtime from the Compatibility menu which will then make sure it grabs the Linux version.

So far so good it’s all working as expected, although the game still intimidates the heck out of me.
