On the future of free long term support for Linux distributions (utcc.utoronto.ca)

The reality is that reliable backports of security fixes is expensive (partly because backports are hard in general). The older a distribution version is, generally the more work is required. To generalize somewhat, this work does not get done for free; someone has to pay for it....

How do you deal with the logs on your servers?

I’m pretty new to selfhosting, but one thing that I know to take seriously is log collection. Since there are a lot of different type of logs (kernel log, application logs, etc) and logs come in many different formats (binary, json, strings) - it’s no easy task to collect them centrally and look through them whenever...

Why does Nvidia hate linux? (lemmy.ml)

So I’ve been trying to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers on my homelab so I can get my fine ass art generated using Automatic1111 & Stable diffusion. I installed the Nvidia 510 server drivers, everything seems fine, then when I reboot, nothing. WTF Nvidia, why you gotta break X? Why is x even needed on a server driver....

I’ve been trying Workstation recently. Python dependency issues caused me to switch to Silverblue for the last 2 years. A new machine with Nvidia got me to try WS. I just had a mystery problem with Python after booting today and that got me looking into Anaconda. I didn’t know it was used under the kernel like this. I’m...

Help with WiFi question, please and thank you

Any ideas why, when I’m on live session of a distro, the wifi works just fine, but when I I install it the wifi has a red X over connections? Specifically this happened with Nobara and the reason I’m running Pop!_OS. I’d would love a fix though in case I want to distro hop, but still be able to install it.

The Eupnea Project - Booting a full linux system on your Chromebook using Depthboot (eupnea-linux.github.io)

Depthboot is a builder script that creates a bootable USB drive/SD-card that can be booted on any x86_64 Chromebook. It supports common Linux distributions(Pop!_OS, Ubuntu, Arch and Fedora) and a variety of the most popular desktop environments. Due to licensing restraints, Depthboot cannot be distributed as an iso. Instead, it...
