The reality is that reliable backports of security fixes is expensive (partly because backports are hard in general). The older a distribution version is, generally the more work is required. To generalize somewhat, this work does not get done for free; someone has to pay for it....
I’m pretty new to selfhosting, but one thing that I know to take seriously is log collection. Since there are a lot of different type of logs (kernel log, application logs, etc) and logs come in many different formats (binary, json, strings) - it’s no easy task to collect them centrally and look through them whenever...
So I’ve been trying to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers on my homelab so I can get my fine ass art generated using Automatic1111 & Stable diffusion. I installed the Nvidia 510 server drivers, everything seems fine, then when I reboot, nothing. WTF Nvidia, why you gotta break X? Why is x even needed on a server driver....
I had a hard drive die today. I shut it down and pulled the drive from the computer, but it didn’t boot and I still couldn’t SSH into it to figure out what was wrong. Finally had to setup a monitor and keyboard to figure out Ubuntu was in emergency mode because the mount failed....
So I’ve set up pop os, everything went smoothly. But I have a problem - My pc is set to turn screens off after 15 mins, also to lock itself. But when it does that, my monitors shut down for a second, then start again so I can see it’s locked, then after few seconds monitors are blank but not turned off, led indicator is...

I just had a mystery problem with Python after booting today and that got me looking into Anaconda. I didn’t know it was used under the kernel like this. I’m...
I have a partition on a remote computer that I mount to my laptop via sshfs. That partition serves as network storage and thus has a lot of pictures and videos on it. But it does not have thumbnails for those. I have installed ffmpegthumbnailer, but that did not fix it. I’m on Ubuntu 23.04. Any ideas?
Happy 30th Birthday “New Technology” File System! Thanks for 30 years of demonstrating Linux superiority with a gap that widens with every new kernel release 👍
