Timesift and a usb drive

I use this and then for each 2 weeks rsync to my cold storage. Some data I also use rclone bisync to backup to cloud, in case I need it so bad, when I’m hitting the road.

Anticorp , in What developments in the Linux world are you looking forward to the most?

Fusion 360 for Linux, because then I can dump Windows forever!

sneakyninjapants ,

Hallelujah!

Anticorp , in Does anyone actually like the default GNOME workflow?

I use Gnome and I love it, but I have never used workspaces. Okay that’s not entirely true, I tried about 10 years ago and I found that it actually slowed me down instead of speeding me up. I’m content with a single desktop and multiple monitors.

mysterc , in What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?
@mysterc@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

My very first experience with Linux was in probably 1993 or so. I ran a dial-up BBS with a Usenet feed and a friend UUCP’d me the first few floppies of slackware to try. I don’t remember getting very far but I had used OS/9 earlier on my Coco 3, so the shell was pretty familiar.

For actual work, about a year later I started working for a dial-up ISP and my workstation was a Linux box connected via Serial PPP to a Sun pizzabox.

I’ve used Linux on and off as a Desktop over the years but always maintained at least one server. In my current jobs there is a mix of Linux and FreeBSD servers I run on a Linux based virtualization platform.

Steamymoomilk , in What is your go-to Linux distro and why?

Nixos, as stable as debian and as rolling edge as arch and if i break something i can just rollback.

di5ciple ,

This man knows. My whole config is stored in github. Super easy to come back to a perfectly setup box or clone it on another machine.

B4x4 , in I Used LINUX For A Year And Never Looked Back [A Rabbithole That Is Worth Falling Into]

But why can't Ctrl C/V just work in Linux???

fugepe OP ,

it works well, what DE are you using?

cmnybo ,

I’ve been using Linux for 15 years and never had any issues with copy/paste. Ctrl+C/V works fine in GUI programs.

Most terminal emulators use Ctrl+Shift+C/V since the Ctrl key is used to send ASCII control characters.

Three years completely on Linux, because I botched my dual boot and decided to try without the Windows partition and… never had to install it again! Happy user!

rutrum , in Why is snaps hated
@rutrum@lm.paradisus.day avatar

Examining my disk partitions with df is ruined now. Every snap gets its own virtual disk.

1337admin ,

Ha I was just listening to the Linux Unplugged podcast and the guy was just complaining about this same thing

Jagger2097 ,

It seems incredibly shortsighted to go this way. Sure 1 or 2 is fine, but when the whole os is snaps it’s abusing the system.

BlessedDog ,
@BlessedDog@lemmy.ml avatar

This is the reason I got rid of snaps

pazukaza ,

Just create an alias that filters loop devices. I mean, if this is your only problem with snap, you can fix it in a second. But I’m betting you have other problems with it.

cmeerw ,

I wonder if that could easily be fixed by just filtering the output of df to not show virtual disks (df already has an -l option to only show local disks, so would expect that changing df could be relatively easy).

Note: I am not saying that I like snaps…

Time shift with rsync, and on occasion I clonezilla the drive and save it to my NAS.

@brihuang95@sopuli.xyz avatar

Was there ever an estimate on when this was supposed to be released?

InvaderSkooge ,

I think they basically said when it was ready it’ll be released and not before, which is good. But… I don’t think they can skip too many release cycles with out releasing it. I know pop is getting regular updates but eventually I’d think they would still run into issues using the 22.04 base.

StarkillerX42 ,

When Ubuntu does major overhauls, they usually do them right after a major release. By that logic, 24.10 would be a good candidate for a public debut.

theshatterstone54 ,

Depending on how things go, it might be with 24.04, but it really depends. They said they’ll release it when it’s ready iirc.

omeara4pheonix , in What is you backup tool of choice?

I use timeshift for local backups, then duplicati for backing up to Amazon glacier monthly.

9488fcea02a9 , in What is your go-to Linux distro and why?

Debian for servers and debian for desktop. Debian everywhere!

titey ,

This is the way.

meisme , in What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?

My dad got me a Raspberry Pi for my 10th birthday. I used Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and was amazed by the customizability. Switched my laptop in 2019, never looked back.
