Spectacle8011 , in (Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?
@Spectacle8011@lemmy.comfysnug.space avatar

I don’t really have a least favorite distribution. I mean, I guess between Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, openSUSE, Manjaro, and Gentoo, the least appealing choices to me are Manjaro and Gentoo. Manjaro is just Arch but worse, because the packages are old and likely to cause incompatibilities with AUR packages that need really up-to-date system packages, and I…don’t trust the maintainers to have configured everything better than I could have myself. Just based on history.

Debian has ancient packages. That’s the only reason. I’d just end up using Flatpak packages or compiling from source.

Any other distribution I could use, including Gentoo, but Arch is the sweet spot for me.

Debian does not use NetworkManager I think, because there is no /etc/NetworkManager/ directory :(

Depends on the model. While some offer bios updates over ip, not all do. That would really be the only thing talking out.

I’ve no idea what you’re referring to aside from maybe the Intel ME, but there may be a way to flash coreboot on it.

WeAreAllOne OP ,

When any pc starts, isn’t there the boot up menu etc? I’m referring to that. In that menus there are options of remote access or firmware updates etc apart of course the usual setup options like in what turn the boots take place eg HDD, network, dvdrom , USB and others like time, date etc.

Intel ME is one concern yes bjti doubt I can flash corevoot on this machine as it is almost 2 years old.

hollunder , in Low battery life due to high power consumption on t490 thinkpad. (help needed)

While I think that 5h of battery life with yt videos running is ok for a t490 you could still try to recalibrate the battery with tlp.

I have a t470s (has two internal batteries) where suddenly the performance of one of the batteries somehow got really bad. After calibration it works as good as before (upower says it’s at about 80%). I did the calibration in windows tho with Lenovo vantage as I’m still running a dual boot setup and didn’t know about tlp before.

interdimensionalmeme , in Secondary Monitor Glitching on KDE Wayland (open source Nvidia driver)

It’s a common wayland problem. Try editing xf86config to force the scanrate to something your monitor supports rather than relying on dpms ddc/ci auto config

beta_tester OP ,

… has the worst ranking

java ,

How’s it worse or better than some no name’s ranking? At least it’s not a 20-minutes video for something that could be a 10 items list.

beta_tester OP ,

You don’t need a name to do anything.

Imagine there’s a nobody and he writes a new kernel - and today he is linus.

java , (edited )

What you’re saying is that the author has made such a revolutionary video that solves problems no other video can solve, that in 30 years this video will be maintained by some of the most brilliant minds on Earth. In other words, the analogy is really, really bad.

Empricorn ,

They don’t rank distributions. At least not by quality. Rather, they list the popular ones (by clicks) and provide resources for each one. It’s notoriously difficult to get user statistics on FOSS, which usually costs nothing and is very privacy-focused.

robbiejuffermans , in Suggestions for consumer cloud syncing on Linux?

You can for example install nextcloud or seafile on a hosted vps at https://qlick.cloud

lupec , in Suggestions for consumer cloud syncing on Linux?

Others have brought up open source solutions already so on a different note I’ll say I’ve used the (closed source and paid) Insync client successfully in the past, and it worked fine. An interesting bonus is you can have it on both Windows and Linux pointing to the same set of files if you dual boot and it’s supposed to work just fine.
