ttrss might be an option if you're into self hosting

GadgeteerZA , in new to Lemmy and still figuring things out. didn't see any ask Linux type communities, so I have a question, seeking guidance
@GadgeteerZA@beehaw.org avatar

Just make sure when you search under communities that you choose All, as it often only defaults to Local. All should return any communities that match your search term, across all Lemmy instances.

kdrive or nextcloud.

IncidentalIncidence , in Brother printer questions

My HL2030 is incredibly easy to use from Linux

newIdentity , in Brother printer questions

Don’t. You’d probably be fine with Ubuntu or Fedora since they’re officially supported by Brother, but if you want to use something different, preper to struggle… a lot

I tried to set up the DCP-7055W on Arch before just giving up and using my phone

SenXEk ,

Driver for DCP-7055W is available on AUR

DCP-7055W

newIdentity ,

Tried that but it simply doesn’t work

And I’m not the only one with this issue. Read the comment

abrasiveteapot ,

Did you check the wiki ? If you look that model up on

wiki.archlinux.org/…/Printer-specific_problems you check the wiki ?

And click on brlaser (the default driver) you’ll find a comment pointing to a fork of the driver

github.com/Owl-Maintain/brlaser

Hope that helps. If you’d already gone through that then sorry to waste your time

newIdentity ,

Wow. Thanks. Didn’t knew that. I tried for hours but could only find a manual installation guide for the property drivers that dint work . Will try this out

abrasiveteapot ,

No prob.

In my opinion always check the arch wiki if you’re having problems, even if you’re not running Arch, it’s a gobsmackingly good repository of linux knowledge

newIdentity ,

I did but I only found a different article that is related to that issue but straight up doesn’t work for this printer

Oh, and it’s in German and hasn’t been updated in a few years

xohshoo , in Opinion: Distributions that only change non-system pre-installed software or desktop environment should instead be packages or scripts

Well there are/were systems like that, Crunchbang bring the one that pops into my mind most immediately, but there are others. I think they’re the minority though, even something like MX which you might say is just Debian with a nice xfce has the option of not using systemd, pop and mint don’t ship with snaps…so a bit more than just themeing…where to draw the line?

cyclohexane OP ,

where to draw the line?

Just taking whatever is easier. If your changes are easily packageable, then it should be a package. Changing systemd is probably not easily packageable. It’s probably possible, but it’s something where its not worth the effort.

Removing snaps? I feel like I’d prefer Mint to package its stuff as a package and leave removing snaps up to the user. But I vaguely remember that mint changes some repos too?

JoeGTN1 , in Brother printer questions

I have an mfc 8900 that works flawlessly on Gentoo, it didn’t take too much futzing around to get both printing and scanning to work.

Reborn2966 , in Printing Rant! Why is this so hard?

send the file to your phone and print using the app.

As an OpenSuSE user I don’t know what you’re talking about.

cyclohexane OP ,

I’d love to clarify if you tell me which part of the post you didn’t understand.

that_leaflet ,

They do understand, they’re just saying that OpenSUSE doesn’t have this problem since you can choose your DE in the installer.

InFerNo , in Printing Rant! Why is this so hard?

I have a network connected hp officejet. If you want I can check my settings and drivers in CUPS tomorrow so you can compare. It has been working with several computers for quite a long time now and it gets auto discovered by windows and Linux.

I use ink from a 3rd party seller and it’s relatively nag free since it’s pretty old. It warns about non authentic ink, but then works just fine.

Fecundpossum , in Multi-monitor and Adaptive sync issues hold me back from making the switch to Linux

I’ve been considering upgrading from my gaming laptop (intel/nvidia) with a secondary monitor to a monstrously specced out Thelio Major with a Ryzen 9 and RX7900. I have more money than time to build, I like the idea of coreboot and supporting system 76 as a company.

I’ve dealt with a slew of multi monitor issues already and my big hope for this new machine (aside from it being a gaming rig with some longevity spec wise) was that most of these display issues would be a thing of the past.

Reading this has me feeling a little crestfallen. Is this what I should expect from newer team red components? I usually run EndeavourOS and would probably install it before even booting Pop! which I’ve used and don’t really care for.

spongeborgcubepants , in GNOME Devs are rethinking the "Activities" button

That seems l like a fine addition, although visually an explicit number being shown would be enough and even better imho.

priapus , in Printing Rant! Why is this so hard?

I have never had an issue printing to my HP printer, or the many other HP, Canon, and Brother printers I have used from my Linux device. CUPS handles all of them exceptionally. On the other hand, Windows machines I’ve used need HP Smart for anything HP, and Macs can never correctly print to Canons.
