@Sneptaur@pawb.social avatar

Oh good. 6.1 seems to fix the only bugs that have personally bothered me. I’m stoked!

michel , in what foss phone OS do you use and why?

@merompetehla
Such question I like to answer with this link from a security specislist.
privsec.dev/posts/

Please check the category Android.
Graphene seems the best possible custom rom.
I use Lineageos because I got an old phone for free.

corsicanguppy ,

a security specislist.

I like how you highlight one of my pet peeves there.

Docs like this should be living so they can be fixed.

michel ,

@corsicanguppy
Could you elaborate what you mean with that?

lord_ryvan , in What is/was your distrohopping journey?

Windows 2000

Windows Vista Windows 8

Trying every Linux distro under the sun for a little while in VirtualBox

Linux Mint + Windows 8 later 10 dual boot due to software required by school

Trying some Arch based systems in VirtualBox

My owm minimal Arch i3 setup + Windows 10 dual boot due to software required by school

Issues with my own setup, Manjaro + W10

Manjaro is weird, EndeavourOS + W10 (only for a short while)

Linux Mint just works (+W10, until I could fully use my own software, now it’s just Mint for several years)

I’m tinkering around with NixOS in QEMU from time to time, not everything “just works” but it’s okay

Pika , in Can I remove a git repo without resorting to `rm -rf` ?
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

honestly I don’t think there is a better way, like others have said you can use a trash program or you can chmod the git directory before deleting but, I would recommend against the comments saying alias the command, that can lead to even bigger problems if you typo thr alias or mess up in the script. rf can’t break anything unless you say the wrong directory which would be the same with aliases anyway,

My recommendation out of them all would be using a trash program to move it to the trash that way if you do screw up the location you have a way to restore it otherwise you could make a script to list the files affected using ls and then prompt a yes/no prompt using read before doing the rm script, but that’s something you definitely want to test in a sandbox or user restricted environment if you’re not used to scripting in case something breaks

LeFantome , in what linux OS should I install on a backup notebook if my main one is debian?

You should give FreeBSD a shot sometime but it is probably not the best choice for a laptop honestly. If you do want to try it, maybe give one of the desktop FreeBSD distros like GhostBSD a try.

If you already like Debian, why not stick with that? If you want to try Mint, maybe Debian Edition ( LMDE ) would be a nice compromise.

BaumGeist , in How do I change the default login screen?

I know it’s bad form to suggest using other software that handles the same functionality instead of suggesting a fix, but it looks like sddm doesn’t have the functionality to change displays at the time of writing.

GDM seems to have a workaround

But it looks like every display manager chooses whichever display based on arbitrary criteria.

ssm , in Can I remove a git repo without resorting to `rm -rf` ?
@ssm@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

use relative paths (cd into the directory below your repository) and use tab completion, and you won’t have problems.

hyperobject , in what linux OS should I install on a backup notebook if my main one is debian?

is there anything which actually bothers you about Debian? what impedes your workflow? what edge cases with hardware and updating affect you?

is there really a reason to switch? do you care about unburdening developers from dealing with systemD?

merompetehla OP ,

is there really a reason to switch?

just considering my options

hyperobject ,

That’s valid. I want to know the reasons why people go to the lengths they do with some distros. I have just settled in.

CuttingBoard , in what linux OS should I install on a backup notebook if my main one is debian?

MX or antix.

BaumGeist , in Is there any way to brute delete stock firmware on a redmi 10c with debian? do you know of any compatible foss OS I could install on this device?
  1. Don’t use hacky unlocks if there’s an official way. The best case scenario is it becomes a headache and isn’t reliable; ghe worst case is that it bricks your phone or installs malware in the bootloader
  2. All I could find looking for custom ROMs for your phone was XDA users shrugging their shoulders and unverified downloads from very shady websites/githubs. I’d suggest getting the most out of this phone you can before selling it and getting one you know works with the OS you want

Do it the official way. SIM cards are cheap.

lemmyreader , in Found a security bug in LMDE6, need some help

Yes, go ahead and file the bug. And as others mentioned already, the custom screensaver modifications of XScreensaver like for LM may have bugs. The author of XScreensaver has been complaining about this several times.

The bug you found looks similar to this one :

Unlocking a machine locked with Xfce’s screensaver xfce4-screensaver has long been a simple matter of turning two monitors on at the exact same time. That makes Xfce4-screensaver versions prior to 0.1.9 segfault and crash - leaving the machine unlocked. This very unfortunate Xfce bug has been open since October 29th 2019 and we have pointed fingers at it several times before. Xfce developer Sean Davis has finally closed this gaping security hole. He explained that the embarrassingly long delay before this security vulnerability was addressed was due to “real life conflicts” in a brief comment on March 22nd. He did not elaborate and we did not ask for further details since it is likely none of our business.

thingsiplay , in File picker issues

My first guess might be you are using a Flatpak app, and the application does not have any rights to do this?

jaykay OP ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

The browser is on flatpak but I tried the same thing on steam which isn’t and it still doesn’t work

thingsiplay ,

Look if you have xdg-desktop-portal-gtk and xdg-desktop-portal are installed. I can’t say if this solves your problem. You can see each portal to be an API that an application must support to use the functionality which the portal does. But you also need to have the portal installed. I know it’s a mess, but its how it is.

For a totally different application, I could not save files until I installed these portals (if I remember right). The problem with Steam might be a different one, if its not a Flatpak.

jaykay OP ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

The thing is, it only breaks sometimes (usually when I need it the most lol). Both are installed and I don’t think it would only not work sometimes if they were missing. I’m thinking of hopping to another distro haha I know it’s not arch’s fault, but this excuse is as good as any lmao

just_another_person , in HDMi port om Fedora 40

Look at the drivers and make sure a secondary display is available.
