possiblylinux127 , in New Laptop Experience (CoPilot Generation)

Can you use the AI accelerator for ollama? That would be pretty useful.

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

I don’t know and I won’t be testing it. This computer is for my Dad and will be his first Linux experience so I can’t be running any experiments. It would be interesting to find out though

sk , in New Laptop Experience (CoPilot Generation)

I read somewhere that the copilot key is a macro for "Left Shift + Windows key + F23" . See if shortcuts with this binding work

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

Not sure what that macro is for but I added more info on my post about the key. I hope it helps

Templa , in Kanban board for Linux

We are currently using Vikunja, I got rid of planka because it was giving way too much trouble considering the amount of features it doesn’t have.

anarchoilluminati , in Which are your preferred laptops?
@anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net avatar

I like running Linux on my Lenovo Ideapad. It wasn’t expensive and has everything I want, including easily running Linux.

The only thing is it’s not a popular laptop so it doesn’t have accessories, like cases or whatever.

gomp , in Can I remove a git repo without resorting to `rm -rf` ?

The problem is that rm -rf shouldn’t scare you?

What are the chances something like

<span style="color:#323232;">~/projects/some-project $ cd ..
</span><span style="color:#323232;">~/projects $ rm -fr some-project
</span>

may delete unexpected stuff? (especially if you get into the habit of tab-completing the directory argument)

afk_strats , in New Laptop Experience (CoPilot Generation)

This is a really useful writeup because it outlines a simpler installation. It seems like most people post when they have a very special or unique situation.

scratchandgame , in Bootloader equivalent to Rufus

What have you used that’s worked well? Or, could I run Rufus on my linux machine with WINE?

A BLOODY STUPID IDEA!

Using Wine is just stupid enough.

dd is safe. I have used Balena’s Etcher 2 years ago but it seems the drive isn’t bootable in UEFI mode!

fhein , in New Laptop Experience (CoPilot Generation)

Did you try running xev and pressing the key to see if it shows up as something?

sic_semper_tyrannis OP ,

That’s not native to Kinoite and since the computer is for my Dad and it’ll be his first Linux experience I don’t want to be adding things with RPM-OSTree. I did add some more info on the key into my post. I hope that helps you

pmk ,

If you don’t want to touch anything, you could boot from a live USB image and try it?

boredsquirrel ,
@boredsquirrel@slrpnk.net avatar

Ublue Aurora is based on Kinoite and has an app for that. You can layer it, layering really is no issue.

The big speed difference is between the first layer and the clean system. If you layer more packages doesnt matter that much.

smpl , in Question about JACK audio interface.
@smpl@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

You need to use a dmix PCM for you card as output.

If you type aplay -L | grep dmix it’ll show you a list of dmix devices. You can set one as the default if you create a file named .asoundrc in your homefolder with the content:

<span style="color:#323232;">pcm.!default {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  type plug
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  slave.pcm "dmix:CARD=Set,DEV=0"
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span>

You of course replace the value of slave.pcm with your desired card name. I just gave one of mine as an example. The above default configuration also takes care of automatic conversion, via the plug pcm, for different samplerates and formats to the settings the hardware is set up to use. Every program that use ALSA for output will read the above file, but you need to restart a program for changes to take effect.

If you enjoy audio production I’m sure you’ll find some good use for Jack, but for audio mixing all you need is to use an ALSA dmix pcm for output.

WeebLife OP ,

I tried my best, but it’s a no go. As I mentioned, I’m a smooth brain linux noobie… the only dmix devices I have are PCH, and a bunch of different Nvidia ones. I tried setting the device to PCH and Nvidia but nothing worked. I’m just going to find a different solution. Thanks for the help tho

kazaika , in The anti-AI sentiment in the free software communities is concerning.

Imo you immensely overestimate the capabilities of these models. What they show to the public are always hand picked situations even if they say they dont

jeena , in Which are your preferred laptops?
@jeena@piefed.jeena.net avatar

I was always happy with everything I got from Lenovo (mostly ThinkPads but also IdeaPad), both cheap ones, used and new ones, always worked without any problems.

I'm ok with the XPS 13 from Dell but I had some problems, they needed to replace the motherboard and when you hold it it bends a bit and does register a click on the touchpad.

I hated my Tuxedo laptop, very expensive and very bad quality, had to send it in to repair twice and after a year I gave up on it because it was so broken and bought a used ThinkPad.

Pekka , in KDE Plasma 6.1 Will Change My Life
@Pekka@feddit.nl avatar

Sometimes I do like his videos, but this one was positioned so bad. The video does go over the changes in Plasma 6.1 and they are good, but this is not a huge change that would change anybodies live.

I know he is probably inspired by channels like Linus Tech Tips, but even they don’t got that far anymore. I think he probably intended this in a comedic way, as most of his audience knows that he makes his videos like this, but it really makes the videos worse.

kenkenken ,
@kenkenken@sh.itjust.works avatar

Nice reaction for his attempt to present changes in Plasma and KDE itself somehow positive. It’s pleasure to see all these dislikes. I want to think that people who do that are KDE users, because it suits perfectly to the culture of the KDE community.

Deckweiss , (edited )

Stop blaming it on some nonexistent cultural phenomenon.

People are capable of recognizing (good or bad) quality aspects of the software they use and the videos they get recommended to watch. And they are free to point out the bad ones as well as the good ones.

angrymouse ,

What is your reasoning here? Kde users are mad because he tried to say KDE is good? I’m really lost here.

foremanguy92_ , in The anti-AI sentiment in the free software communities is concerning.

You’re mid right, the when something AI based is announced this is really criticized by some people and there are almost right. When something new pops, like windows recall, it is certain that this “new” feature is really not what AI is capable, and asks really important questions about privacy. But you’re right on the fact that Linux should be a bit more interested on AI and tried to made it the right way! But for now there’s no really good use cases of AI inside a distro. LLMs are good but do not need to be linked to user activities. Image generators are great but do not need to be linked to user activities… As exemple when Windows tried Recall and failed. Apple iOS 18 wants to implement that, and this should be surely a success inside the Apple minded people. But here where FOSS, privacy and anti Big-Techs guys are the main people that’s absolutely sure that every for-profit “new AI” feature would be really hated. I’m not against this mind just giving facts

HulkSmashBurgers , in Fedora Silverblue is the most frustrating distro so far
