openSUSE Tumbleweed, it just works for me.

Been switching between Arch and Linux Mint for a while now. I run Arch and EndeavourOS on my laptops (Arch on my daily 2-in-1, Endeavour on my TV laptop) but I can’t decide which is better for VR on my main rig… probably because VR on Linux is kinda in a pathetic state anyway lol. Next week I’m getting a second GPU for simple display-out so I can use my 6800XT to run VR in a Windows VM, probably on Arch

Edit: landed on EndeavourOS, basically just Arch with a GUI installer, DE by default, and some other tweaks. It’s what I kept turning Arch into pretty much lol

I use Debian with a patched version of motif window manager. The 90s never ended: https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/7bded692-9a4c-47d7-95b3-270c74480fc6.jpeg

“Motif Window Manager”? I’m on mobile and have old eyes, but it looks like WindowMaker. If so, great choice! If not, I’ll have to look closer when I get home.

It really is mwm :) The toolchest-like menu in the upper left corner isn’t part of mwm though.

You can find more info about the mwm fork here: fastestcode.org/emwm.html

hddsx ,

As someone who uses mwm for work, I only have one question for you: Why?

Borgzilla ,
@Borgzilla@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s simple, easily customisable, and I like the big chiseled buttons.

cosmicmold , in What distro(s) do you use?

I used to use Arch but recently switched to Fedora. I need stability now.

ScottE , in What distro(s) do you use?

I use Manjaro, but I run it like vanilla Arch (for example pacman/yay and not pamac). I find this to be a sweet spot for me - rolling releases are so incredibly nice, and Manjaro being slightly slower than Arch is good from a stability standpoint in my experience.

I use ZFS all over the place, including the root storage pool on my home server, which has overall been a great experience with systemd-boot.

I have a few dozen computers and most run Pop!_OS.

cdsigma ,

What’s your second most commonly used distro?

Eufalconimorph , in What distro(s) do you use?

NixOS. Declarative config with opt-in state is awesome.

WatTyler ,
@WatTyler@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Fellow NixOS traveller. I used Nix for work and never saw the appeal of a whole OA built around it but when I saw a tutorial with the declarative config I was instantly sold.

chadac ,

Same here. It’s made my life a whole lot easier since on previous distros, I had to depend on documenting manual hacks I had done.

toastloop , in What distro(s) do you use?

Debian, for ultimate stability, Fedora for every day, and Arch for my project box.

ballogh , in What distro(s) do you use?

Manjaro for the best 🥰

Jo351 ,

Manjaro + SteamOS. Wanted to refresh myself on gaming with Linux/Proton prior to the Deck launch and Manjaro seemed the most similar. Helped that my Win11 install decided to crash explorer.exe every 5 seconds around the same time.

visforvictory , in r/linux is private now

i don’t think i could really care less.

lemmy is just really exciting!!

Ubuntu for life. Unpopular opinion i know, please don’t stone.

elonspez ,

umm it’s literally the most popular distro

And yet everyone in r/linux and r/linuxmemes kept shitting on it

Nuuskis ,

When you take Pop_OS! into account?

SSUPII , in What distro(s) do you use?

I’ve felt in love woth Debian the moment I used it for the first time

klangcola , in Long time Linux user feeling burnt out

I’m actually having the opposite experience (for the most part). All the little papercuts of yesteryear are almost completely gone, and it’s only looking better on the horizon. Of course your mileage may vary depending on use case and hardware…

Some things of the top of my head:

  • Flatpak replacing 3rd party PPAs. Brand new software without dependency hell or breaking system packages? Yes please
  • Snaps and AppImages too
  • XDG Portals standards, making snaps and flatpaks play nice with confinement
  • Audio and Bluetooth? It “just works” now
  • Pipewire
  • Even gaming works really well now, with Proton, DXVK etc
  • AMD and Intel drivers baked in to the kernel
  • Wayland finally being production ready for many use-cases, and being adopted as the default, fixing so many of the ancient X11 issues (screen tearing, multiple displays with different scaling, refresh rate, fractional scaling) ( cries in Nvidia )
  • Nvidia finally changing their mind so Wayland on Nvidia can be a thing (I can’t wait 😊)
  • KDE Connect / gsConnect phone integration
  • Screensharing on Wayland even on legacy X11 apps becoming a thing through the new screensharing Portal

The only problem I’ve had recently is Ubuntu’s forced snapification, and snap being very rough around the edges for Desktop apps (ahem drag’drop)

aes , in What distro(s) do you use?

Fedora, I’m not a tech person by Linux user standards and I just need an OS that works

floppingfish , in What distro(s) do you use?

Linux Mint, it just works
