You can help map roads, buildings and other features for disaster zones and other areas in urgent need of accurate mapping.

I didn’t want to pay for windows.

Critical last straw for me was having shit Internet and windows updates eating literally all my bandwidth. Other reasons include privacy, ownership, etc. I was already familiar with Linux when I switched.

Linux, BSD, and open source in general has saved my life too. It’s given my a passion and a love again. Linux and BSD quite literally work better than any antidepressant I’ve ever had.

However, I didn’t know what I was doing, and broke my computer just as the professor foretold.

A rite of passage.

Lmao I still remember the first time I installed Arch… without any networking 🤦‍♂️ I couldn’t even sit next to the modem on a cable connection because I literally had nothing that could talk to it.

Thought it would be easy since I used other distros for about a year, but none was the right one for me. Years later I’m super happy with Fedora.

SapienSRC , in why did you switch?

A variety of reasons really. Privacy concerns, not having full control over my system with Windows, ads being pushed on my computer that I can’t turn off easily, Linux is more fun to use and learn about in general. Last but not least is community. The community around Linux is fun to be a part of and makes me want to learn more so I can contribute in any way I can to the projects that I like. Once you start really checking out Open Source software and what it represents it’s hard not to care about it.

I’ve submitted a few corrections before. Garmin or Strava used it for mapping runs and I quite liked it because in my area their maps of trails were actually much more complete and up to date than Google maps. For example in one nature park the current trails were shown on osm but Google showed a completely different set. I later came across a really old and faded sign in the park that showed trails that lined up with what Google showed despite them not existing any more. The new trails WERE shown on a pdf the city provided on their website but I guess they must have never been submitted to Google or something. Fortunately there must have been some dedicated OSM users in my area who were inputting updates.

ono , in Which M.2 SSD for Linux?

Solidigm P44 Pro is a good choice. This model is based on the Hynix Platinum P41, which is well regarded. They provide a bootable linux ISO image for updating firmware, so you can boot that directly, or potentially extract the files and run the updater on your distro of choice. (It’s probably best not to do it on an installation running from the SSD, of course.)

I don’t see any firmware bug workarounds for these models in the linux kernel sources, which is a good sign.

Solidigm is the company resulting from SK Hynix recently buying Intel’s NAND business. They apparently contribute to LVFS, which is another good sign, even if the current model’s firmware isn’t on there yet.

W10 came out and W7 security updates was done. Had to move to W10 for work and our engineering software got slower. Moved home (older) computers to W10 and they became useless bricks. Found SUSE/OpenSUSE supported my CAD software with their linux release. Swapped to that. Speed was back for work and home stuff. That was 2017 or so. I haven’t gone back to Windows except for some shared excel reports. Teamviewer, Webex, zoom, MS teams all have linux versions for work collaboration.

featherfurl , in What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?

Tried installing debian in 2002 but had no idea what I was doing editing xorg configs so didn’t succeed. Succeeded in running knoppix soon after, but didn’t really know what to do with it because I mainly used a computer for gaming in those days.

Ran ubuntu in 2007 for a while but I needed to do too many things in a VM so I skulked back to windows.

Used linux for random bits and pieces over the years but was always too tied to art software and games. Proton fixed the games side of things in 2018 so I decided to go all in reworking my art workflow to be linux focused because I wanted not to worry about needing a windows license for all my machines, buying expensive software, etc. etc. (And I wanted to get into creative programming more.)

Running linux has made automation and programming a much more seamless part of the way I use computers and I am endlessly grateful for this. General computing is fun again and I now have a heap of skills I always wanted.

KellyThomas , in Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

I used OSM tiles when creating webmaps sometimes and they can be great.

That said it’s coverage is inconsistent. This area around a highschool has really high detail footprints for the houses so I think it might have been part of their IT class at some point.

That’s every village in Germany. Well, maybe not every, but it’s not a surprising level of detail to me - interesting, how the investment into this project seems to vary a lot between countries. Do we maybe have a bit too much free time on our hands?

I’ve used it, but mostly to contribute as the data for my area is sparse as well. I find it fun to map the areas I visit. I haven’t added recently because I am using a mobile Linux device and I haven’t found an application to easily contribute.
