I use manjaro, if you like the up-to-dateness of arch, with the polish and ease of setup of popos, it may be a great candidate for you.

I don’t know enough to dislike snaps, I’m just spiteful enough to dislike cannonical trying to force me to use them

I love Kubuntu. Plasma reminds me of windows 10 layout which I prefer over the windows 11/ Mac drawer layout.

citytree , in What developments in the Linux world are you looking forward to the most?

Looking forward to greater support for “driverless printing” in more Linux distributions, especially via IPP-over-USB. This would allow most consumer-level printers to be used directly from Linux without needing proprietary drivers and/or explicit Linux support from the printer vendor. This solves one of the common pain points when using desktop Linux at home.

InFerNo , in What Are Your Favorite SBCs (Single Board Computers), Why, and How Did You Get Into Them?

I have 2 Odroid C4 SBC’s that I use as desktop replacements and an Odroid C1 that is my pi hole and Quake 2 server.

All very capable for their intended purpose. Very happy with them. I chose them because they were more powerful than contemporary rpi devices.

Thorned_Rose ,
@Thorned_Rose@kbin.social avatar

ODroids are massively underrated. The first Pi we bought is dead. The second one is now so underpowered for what we want that it's been turned into retro arcade machine. It still finds ways to cause problems too. Whereas our first ODroid is still going strong after many years of faithful service. We added an ODroid toaster to the mix a couple of years ago that's also given us zero issues and works wonderfully.

seperis OP ,
@seperis@lemmy.ml avatar

I bought Home Assistant Blue from Ameridroid, which was Home Assistant’s first (and happily still continuing) jump into making Home Assistant more accessible and easy if you weren’t a hobbyist or tinkerer: Odroid N2+ preloaded with Home Assistant OS, a super adorable blue case, and power supply. That was my first experience with that board and with eMMC; 128 GB of it, talk about turning my head (also 4 GB RAM). Honestly, the only reason I didn’t get another is I didn’t have a project that required it; the reason I even found out the Beagles existed was the Open Source Border Router project I wanted to do had it as an option for the walk-through and gave me a reason to test drive.

But I have to agree: I’ve been running it straight for three years now and the Odroid does its job with zero issues. Home Assistant and its parts have given me problems, but Blue (yes, it’s name is Blue, it was just there) never does.

Raphael , in Best distro for Hyprland?

Debian

theshatterstone54 OP ,

Debian doesn’t have these packages. Otherwise, I would just hop to it.

Raphael ,
@Raphael@lemmy.world avatar

Compile it =D

You could also use Nix or those things that let you install AUR packages in Debian.

theshatterstone54 OP ,

Unfortunately, Hyprland is built on a tagged version of wlroots, and because it will likely need to pull in newer packages than Debian, I could end up in compilation hell. And I would prefer to avoid using nix for window managers/Wayland compositors if I can avoid it.

Just recently did the same. The answer with the “migrate-gnome-kde.sh” helped me.

I like the kind of revival of nice TUIs that is going on right now. I just wish it continues !

Zozano , in What developments in the Linux world are you looking forward to the most?

I’m looking forward to XFCE/Wayland.

I started Linux 2 years ago, and learned a lot, but never bothered learning about X11 because I figured it would be a waste of time.

afb ,

Me too. I love XFCE so much, but it’s impossible to deny how large a step forwards Wayland is on a technical level (although there are still kinks to work out). When XFCE moves over, I’ll be able to confidently do so as well.

flubba86 , in Is there anyone who use Void Linux as daily driver?

I’m in the same boat. For a long time I was a RHEL admin at work, and ran Ubuntu at home. Three years ago my workplace switched to Ubuntu servers, and at home I switched to Manjaro. Now I’m sick of Manjaro, and want to move to something else for home use. I’ve been looking at NixOS and Void, both seem pretty cool in their own way.

Are there community packages like the arch repos? I’ve come to rely on those in Manjaro, like I rely on 3rd party PPAs in Ubuntu.

Mereo ,

I’m curious, why are you sick of Manjaro? I’ve been use it for 2 years and it’s been smooth sailing. Genuinely just curious.

flubba86 ,

No reason, really. I’m not part of the “hate on Manjaro” club.

I got started with Manjaro because I was looking for an Arch-like experience, but with better distro management, curated packages, etc. I’ve had some of my best PC gaming experiences on Manjaro with Luttis and Proton, it is a great Linux gaming distro.The distro managers have definitely let me down more than once, most notably when they wouldn’t ship KDE Plasma 5.25 when it was released citing “stability concerns”, and then doing the same thing with Plasma 5.27. But those issues are behind us, and didn’t affect me too badly (I just needed to wait 6 weeks until the next release to get my updates). I’ve come to realise through my use of Manjaro that I actually always want to use it like Arch. Often things I want to install are not available in the Manjaro repos, but are available on AUR. Then installing from AUR sometimes depends on things that are not in Manjaro repos. It gets messy, and I should just use Arch.

But rather than moving to Arch, I think I am itching to move to something completely different, and NixOS and Void are about as different as it gets.

heimchen ,

Yea, Cosmo Desktop sounds really cool.

mojo ,

If you’re not familiar with Linux and distros, this reads like a foreign language lol

meisme ,

Pop_OS!, a popular Linux distribution, is writing a new desktop environment. A desktop environment is basically the functionality of the desktop, think the taskbar and window snapping, etc. on Windows and the dock and top bar on macOS. A desktop environment also comes with its own set of apps, like how Windows comes with Explorer and Task Manager.

denissimo , in What is you backup tool of choice?
@denissimo@feddit.de avatar

Syncthing. I don’t want to invest into a NAS and put some load into my already greedy power bill, so I chose something decentralized. Syncthing really just works like Torrent but for your personal files: Whatever happens on the computer, also does on the phone, and on the laptop. Each have about 1TB of space and 3 times redundancy? Hell yea buddy dig in.

fantasy95 ,
@fantasy95@lemmy.world avatar

I just found out about syncthing yesterday and it really is superb, it’s so easy to use even crossplatform. unison is another syncing tool that I like, I find it better for bidirectional syncing

nis ,

But that’s not really backup, is it? It just synchronizes folders.

denissimo ,
@denissimo@feddit.de avatar

Yes but it is a automated backup solution if you want it to. I just put important stuff in the Syncthing folder and rest assured its also on the phone incase the computers SSD caughs fire.

nis ,

I think you are confusing synchronizing with backup. If you delete a file in your Syncthing folder and the deletion gets synchronized, that file is lost. If you do the same in a folder backed up by, say, Borg, you can roll back the deletion and restore the file.

I may be wrong about Syncthing, though. I haven’t used it yet, but will probably use it in the future. Just not for backup :)

denissimo ,
@denissimo@feddit.de avatar

This is true if you leave it at defaults but I make use of file versioning. When you flick that one on, files that are otherwise replaced or deleted will actually move to a offline .stversions folder. That is very vital I must say in case a host catches some encryptor malware eheh

nis ,

I didn’t know that was a possibility. Still, it seem kind of not really what Syncthing is intended for. I mean, they even state it in their FAQ:

No. Syncthing is not a great backup application because all changes to your files (modifications, deletions, etc.) will be propagated to all your devices. You can enable versioning, but we encourage you to use other tools to keep your data safe from your (or our) mistakes.

priapus , in I want ease of use, polish, and the i3 workflow. Should I use fedora or nix os?

NixOS is not going to give you ease of use. It requires a lot of learning. If you want to do anything not already supported by NixOS options, you’ll have to do some work.

abuttandahalf OP ,

Are there a lot of things not supported by nixos options? What are some examples?

emr , in What is your go-to Linux distro and why?
@emr@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Lubuntu my beloved. Ubuntu enough for me to google myself out of anything but lightweight enough to make me feel good about what I’m spending cycles/battery on… and familiar enough that I don’t need to learn a whole new desktop paradigm when all I’m gonna do with the desktop gui is start an app anyway.
