ArcoLinux with i3.

nerdschleife ,
  • it’s basically an arch installer plus a bunch of presets and scripts to get you started. The goal of this distro is to guide you to your first Arch install. I did that, but stuck with Arco.
  • the absolute friendliest linux community I have come across. The creator himself is likely to answer most of your queries. The youtube channel is a goldmine. Shoutout, Eric Dubois!

Have used it before but am not currently running it. Absolute treat for someone who wants to start digging deeper into the inner workings of Linux. The tutorial videos are pretty clearly a labor of love.

easy enough to use for me (I'm a linux newb) and I can setup steam on it!
edit: forgot to mention I can get hibernation working on Ubuntu when I couldn't figure out how to do that in Fedora

jrubal1462 ,

Are you playing steam games that have Linux versions? Or is the “comparability mode” stable and fast enough that you don’t really have to think about it?

I don’t have time to fuck about, I use ubuntu mate because it gets out of my way and does what I expect it to do.

JubilantJaguar ,

Because it just works. Because it’s based on free Debian and not corporate RedHat. Because mainstream Linux needs a flagship distro and that distro needs to be used and supported.

ehyuman ,

but Ubuntu is corporate, no?

astroturds , in ZorinOS?

I like it, it's an Ubuntu lts with a nice theme (I wish it had grey instead of just black and white though), wine integration to run compatible windows software and it's always just worked for me.

I don't like the fact that some things are locked out unless you pay for the pro version but I think that's just layouts and stuff.

I'd say it's good but like all of these Ubuntu derivatives you're almost always better off just using Ubuntu. Even people changing from windows to Linux, I'd still just tell them to use Ubuntu.

Arch. It’s a “build-your-own” distro without the hassle of compiling everything from source, like with Gentoo (still love Gentoo, though). Also, it has pretty big repos with the AUR on top of that.

And no, it’s not unstable, if you can read. My oldest Arch install was 5 years old and even then, it didn’t break. I just wanted to do a fresh install for no particular reason.

    This is subjective, but after distro hopping, Linux Mint XFCE requires the least amount of post install configuration for my use case and personal preferences.

    Also, they show a preference for flatpack over snap but don't lock you in/out of either.

    Backing up NixOS is very straight forward and easy. It’s kinda the same as docker-compose in that respect.

    What does it do differently to any other “easy” distro?

    TCB13 ,
    @TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

    Isn’t Debian an easy distro? I don’t get it. Debian defaults to GNOME, setup is easier than Windows, includes a software store etc. what else do people need?

    Ashiette ,

    Debian is hard to master for someone coming from Windows ^^

    Plus, it’s pretty ugly without heavy customisation. Which ZorinOS (or Pop!_OS) ain’t :)

    TCB13 ,
    @TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

    Why do you say that? It defaults to GNOME, that essentially had everything out of the box that those ones you speak about have. GNOME’s default theme is also finally something decent.

    I’m not saying GNOME is perfect, far from it, but at least they’re no longer using brown+orange as their default colors. Now lets see if they can fix the font rendering once and for all.

    EmilyIsTrans ,
    @EmilyIsTrans@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    I think Zorin’s approach makes sense for people who don’t want to learn a new interface and don’t have a lot of technical experience. GNOME does generally already have a good interface, but I think a lot of non-technical people wouldn’t understand (or want to understand) stuff like shell extensions and GNOME tweaks.

    I don’t think I would switch to it anytime soon, but I could imagine it being used in a university.

    VirtualBriefcase ,

    I think Debian is close to new user friendly IF they pick Gnome or KDE with all the default stuff there, and has getting closer with non-free firmware enabled by default now, but still isn’t quite there as a plug and play new user friendly distro. Things like flatpak w/flathub or snap out of the box isn’t there, and it’d be hard to get a full Debian setup without using the command line (especially for a non free software zelot who wants Spotify and discord out of the box)

    Something like mint is just a tad easier, and that might be the different between an easy install and an unexpected set of hiccups that a new user might struggle with. The mint installer is also a lot more intuitive, at the cost of being less universally compatible (a big goal of Debian).

    20gramsWrench ,

    it’s even more “easy” in it’s presentation, the visuals are polished, it has a full windows like start menu, both on gnome and xfce, the theme config is clean and barebones, the choice of desktop configs with the bars and menu is reduced to like 6 choices, and little details like that to make it feel like a professionally made os, meaning it’s only use is for people with no idea of what and os is, it’s a little better at that than even mint, it does make it pretty shitty if you want to learn to use linux since many layers of simplicity are added on top of an otherwise full featured desktop

    Personally, I currently prefer Arch for the following reasons.

    • AUR
    • The Wiki
    • The many vanilla packages
    • Because you can easily create your own packages with the PKBGUILD files.
    • Because, based on my own experience, Arch is quite usable despite the current packages.

    If I had to choose another distribution, it would definitely be OpenSuse. Their rolling version, Tumbleweed, is also highly recommended.
