Like 3 days ago I got a site wide ban for posting a picture of the comments spez altered on TheDonald like 4 years ago. Reddit has gone downhill ever since Pao got the CEO title and has only gotten worse under spez.
So each lemmy site is an instance with its own servers. Even though they all connect to one another, they run on their on load and data. So you’re on lemmy.world, which is being very overloaded with the influx of reddit folks. I’m on lem.ee which is buttery smooth, yet still able to see posts and comments from world, since it’s all federated
You just make an account on a smaller instance (easiest way to find them is at the bottom of the page here), and subscribe to all the communities you want from lemmy.world and others to start pulling them in.
Then proceed to shitpost as normal.
EDIT: Alternatively, go here, switch the “Software” option to Lemmy at the top, and look for a server geographically close to you.
For a bit more context on what others have already said, Lemmy is more decentralized, akin to email. Lemmy.world is the biggest website for Lemmy, in the same way Gmail is for email, but like email, there are tons of smaller or even personal sites that can all network together. If one site goes down, only content on that site and its users are affected, others are not.
I hope you did all this behind a good ad blocker/DNS filter or else you just increased engagement with the site and potentially their ad delivery network. They also collect the analytics, think advertisers won’t pay for metadata related to a cohort of users mass exodusing? I love the decentralized setup here, this is really cool. Let’s get more time and engagement here instead and stop providing our data to Predditers.
The only time I don’t use an adblocker is on my work computer because they are so locked down. If I have to go there again I’ll use a VPN just to fuck with their engagement.

This is just the sort of comment that would have become a thing back in the early days of Reddit. Welcome to your stardom. I want someone to point out my comment for being prescient 5 years from now when you’re the next Unidan, but maybe don’t turn into a toxic dick like he did.
