Thankfully they built in a block functionality too.

I thought for years that the idea of spending the money on an AppleTV was not going to be worth it and used Chromecast for years. I was a dedicated Android user for something like 8 or 9 years. I made the switch to iPhone and the AppleTV along with it at one point when I rebuilt my entertainment center and love how it gets the fuck out of your way. Not to mention their UI has absolutely nothing going on. Just your app, a way to find your video, and playback controls.

This isn’t an ad for the AppleTV, but rather just pointing out that having a dedicated device with a simple remote not flooded with 17 layers of UI and ads makes for a great user experience. Google just doesn’t seem to get this and I’d probably still be a dedicated user if they got their act together. Too late now.

ManosTheHandsOfFate ,
@ManosTheHandsOfFate@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure how you had your Chromecast set up but I have the 4K version on one TV and the Nvidia Shield on another. The apps I want are favorited and sit right in the center of the screen. I turn it on with my remote and select the app to launch it. I’m not sure it could be any simpler.

Dasnap OP ,
@Dasnap@lemmy.world avatar

I use a Shield also and modded a completely different launcher onto it.

TurboDiesel ,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

You’re describing the Chromecast with Google TV. The vanilla Chromecast dongle has no app support; all you can do is cast your media from your phone and hope it works out.

It was novel when it came out, but they stopped making any serious improvements years ago, to the point now where YouTube casting is hot garbage that drives you insane if you want to view more than a couple videos in a row. I have constant problems with all of my cast devices with maintaining connection to the dongle, with media playback, you name it.

Johanno ,

That because Google gives you a tease of their New technology and then lock it behind proprietary Software and Hardware for it actually to function.

nueonetwo ,

I got my Chromecast like 10 years ago and have the same issue with YouTube casting. Netflix is also pretty terrible and only connects 50% of the time, but once it’s connected it’s good. It wouldn’t be so bad if it just let me cast my whole screen and not open some dumb app like with every other website.

The dumb thing is I can watch shows in HD issue free from a free streaming site on my pc but the second I cast it my internet goes to shit and I have to leave it on 720 or it buffers endlessly. I should just switch to the HDMI cable route but I don’t want a cord hanging across the floor, too many dogs.

otacon239 ,

One of the biggest differences for me was that all the apps under the AppleTV are built on the same SDK. There are just a couple services out there that don’t use it, and they stand out like a sore thumb. I found Android space to be way more disjointed overall.

It’s almost as if we should be spending our time working to mitigate climate change and helping build societal resilience instead of working on meaningless careers…

newIdentity ,

Can’t do that without money

jittery3291 ,

Very true. Some of us can afford to live with a bit less and recalibrate their life towards improving things. Not all can, though, of course.

bdiddy ,

at this point we need to be spending all our money on SURVIVING climate change. We can work on mitigating as well, but we’re past the point of no return and still arguing if it’s even an actual thing lol.

jittery3291 ,

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. There’s a lot in your comment. We badly need to mitigate, but we also need to put a lot of our resources into ensuring we survive as a species. A lot of money is needed in the global south, particularly (who have, on large, barely contributed to this problem).

bdiddy ,

yeah my main problem is while we’re over here still arguing with people about climate change’s existence and the loud solution is to somehow rid ourselves overnight of fossil fuels… Meanwhile that’s all fine and dandy, but even if we stopped using fossil fuels today the damage is there and we’re already seeing critical water shortages in tons of places.

It’s time to accept that we are going to have to live through this to some degree until science hopefully finds a way to suck the carbon out of the air.

The hurricanes, the floods, the droughts… all things we need to start working on solving. Droughts being front and center. We need to desalinate. There is just no way around it. We need to get started on that effort yesterday.

cygnosis , (edited )

It’s funny to see this comment downvoted so heavily (-14 at the time). I wonder if it’s disagreement or just “I don’t like that idea”…

The simple facts are we’ve dumped over 2 trillion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. A bit over half has been absorbed by the oceans. We have no realistic way of removing it. And combined with other GHGs it’s driving an unstoppable global warming. We can talk about reducing emissions and renewables. But even if we stopped all emissions today, it still wouldn’t be enough to prevent the global average temperature from continuing to increase.

bdiddy ,

I think there are still lots of people holding out hope that we steer off the cliff, but meanwhile we’re still globally using as much fossil fuels as we ever have and while there are things on the horizon the CO2 in the air is not going anywhere. So we are going to have major problems to deal with in terms of human sustainability even if we went 100% green today.

Humans are smart, we need time to change entire species to a more sustainable living. Time we just don’t have. So it’s time we skip the BS and start talking about where we are going to get water, how we are going to farm, how we are going to keep the oceans from destroying our coastlines etc…

If we start now we might be able to mitigate some of the effects of climate change or at the very least make it so not everyone just immediately loses all their assets and/or dies from lack of water or starvation.

Let’s avoid mad max if we can.

I’m not saying we give up the fight on eradicating fossil fuels from our system, but I imagine the downvoters took my post that way. It’s just if you spend about 10 seconds watching CNBC or listening to our politicians you’ll find out pretty quick they don’t care about climate change all that much. Just making money… Even the politicians that do care the best they can do is try to help the “free market” move us to a sustainable future lol. Just not going to work.

We have some major water crisis going on right now in a lot of places in the US. Not just deserts. The water wars will be coming much sooner than we anticipated if we don’t start to prepare for it.

I just use an HDMI cable from my laptop.

throwsbooks ,

God I want to do that but for some reason Prime Video on my laptop is locked to like 480p on “highest quality” but when I cast to my TV on my phone it’s full HD. Like what gives??

Do they hate that I’m on Linux using Firefox or something?? I tried Chrome and had the same issue.

Tried searching for the answer but all the Reddit posts say “it’s just your slow ass Internet”!! Nah man I’m on fibre.

(Edit: though I do use my HDMI for videos I have on my hard drive ofc, but sometimes I don’t want to bother looking for alternative sources…)

jostal ,

It’s a Linux thing. I have the same problem and when I looked it up I believe I found Amazon just won’t stream full quality on Linux browsers for some reason, I forget why exactly but it’s very annoying.

Edit: Found this which says if not on Windows or Mac it restricts you to standard definition. Amazon.com

HelixDab2 ,

Oh, yeah, I should have said that; these are for rips, not for streaming. I loathe streaming with a passion, hence I rip everything.

I found Amazon just won’t stream full quality on Linux browsers for some reason, I forget why exactly but it’s very annoying.

Because of Widevine, i.e. Google DRM. The DRM “Level” determines the quality a device can stream, Linux desktops can only stream 720p content, for the most part.
