Now that’s a religion i support

PsychedSy , in What common clothing threads look like under a microscope

Clothes are all of a sudden disgusting to me. Artificials are now much more desirable.

BlackLodgeCooper ,

Except they shed micro plastics everywhere including the water supply.

SwallowsDick ,

Don’t worry, skin up close is much worse

PsychedSy ,

You don’t have to remind me how disgusting we are.

Hotzilla , in Barreleye fish: The deep-sea weirdo with rotating eyes and a see-through head

Very rude to call it wierdo, you are making it feel bad :(

soupspoon ,

I thought the same thing! I felt a little better when they explained why it’s awesome further down, being an awesome weirdo is good

The article explained that in the twilight zone (200-1000m down) there’s just enough sunlight filtering through that creatures on the sea floor make shadows, and they’ve evolved bioluminescence to eliminate those shadows, but this fish’s eyes filter out sunlight so that it isn’t fooled. That’s pretty neat!

Alpaca superiority on display. Thick but also fineeeee.

While a neat picture, as I understand it the itchiness of wool mostly has to do with how long the fibers are. With short fibers there are lots of fiber ends poking out of the fabric everywhere. Alpaca or merino wool has much longer fibers, avoiding this issue.

Erk ,

Pretty sure you’re right. The scale on wool actually gives it some of its desirable properties I believe, like being able to cling to itself for easy splicing and felting.

gondezee , in What common clothing threads look like under a microscope

Merino where?

Oh, sorry. Disclaimer: Color may not be to scale.

Stoney_Logica1 ,

So scratchy. When I lived in the barracks I used shirt-stays to keep that blanket nice and tight for any inspection. I kept a cotton comforter in my wall-closet and would toss it over the made rack and just sleep on that with a second blanket over me. In the morning both would go back into the locked closet and I’d still have a perfectly made rack after some slight straightening.
