modulartable , in I've always been an Nvidia graphics card user, and I don't know anything about AMD. I have some questions about switching over.
  • For 1, all motherboards should work with both AMD and Nvidia GPU.
  • For 2, you can mix and match, there are some benefits to using both an AMD CPU and GPU, namely Smart Access Memory
  • For 3, AMD’s naming is confusing as hell but basically they used to have R3, R5, R9, etc for different tiers of cards, but now everything goes under the “RX” naming prefix.
  • They use the X and XT suffix to differentiate the fastest versions of the same tiers of cards or revisions of cards. (Kind of like Nvidia’s TI suffix)
  • The equivalent of a 4070 is a RX 6950 XT as far as I’m aware.

“Smart Access Memory” is just AMD’s marketing term for Resizable BAR. You don’t need an AMD CPU or GPU to make use of it.

modulartable ,

Good to know! Didn’t realize at first it was just their marketing term for Resizable BAR lol TIL

0nyxee , in Gaming often fetishises the new but many great things exist in the past, so let's strap into our time machines and talk about our favourite games released before say 2010?

I definitely have a lot that really get me feeling nostalgic. Couldn’t even count the hours I spent playing games as a kid lol but here’s a random list of a few:

  • Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete (My favorite of all time)
  • Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age
  • Dragon Warrior VII
  • Final Fantasy: Tactics
  • Chrono Cross
  • Phantasy Star I and III
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Minish Cap
  • The Sims 1
  • RuneScape
scribblemacher ,

Putting DQ7 on here is almost a bit spicy, but I think it’s one of the best representations of the series in terms of scope, pacing, gameplay, and storytelling. It’s absolutely slow, but that was sort of the point.

0nyxee ,

I definitely have a few controversial choices. But DQ7 is legitimately my favorite DQ game and I always thought it didn’t get the attention it deserved. It was a long one to get through though.

I’d argue that having Chrono Cross and not Chrono Trigger is even spicier lol. But I think it’s really just nostalgia since that’s what I sunk a lot of hours into back then. I remember hunting everywhere for Final Fantasy Chronicles because it included a copy of Chrono Trigger, but I could never get my hands on it.

scribblemacher ,

I can get behind the CC vs CT take. I finished CT first circa 1998 but found it pretty boring (I have a better appreciation for it now). CC was a lot more enjoyable to me–combat had a lot going on, and the music is an unmitigated masterpiece.

chloyster , in Blasphemous 2 devs want to make their Metroidvania game even more Metroidvania

Soooo excited for this. Lack of combat variety was basically my only issue (and spikes) and seeing that’s changed is exciting

BuxtonWater , in Terraria's devs have been trying to stop developing Terraria for years, but they just can't quit
@BuxtonWater@beehaw.org avatar

I’ve been playing it a bunch since the big 1.4.4 patch, it’s crazy how much work the devs have put it to polish this game into a cheap but high quality game gem over the years.

sculd , in Gaming often fetishises the new but many great things exist in the past, so let's strap into our time machines and talk about our favourite games released before say 2010?

The original Red Alert is still one of my favorites! In the expansion you can even fight Giant Ants!!! (Not sure how many people knew)

SmallAlmond , in Terraria's devs have been trying to stop developing Terraria for years, but they just can't quit

Terraria is just too good to be left like that

Dearon , in In praise of the short narrative video game...

I really enjoyed Paradise Killer, a fun murder mystery game with a really solid soundtrack and neat visuals. I had a great time exploring the island uncovering its secrets and getting to know the remaining characters, and when I finished the game I was done. No loose ends or unanswered questions left, just a nice experience to remember (and a soundtrack to occasionally revisit)

MJBrune , in July’s Humble Choice games are here, and the main event is Outer Worlds

Humble started as this way to get a bunch of interesting indie games all at once. It’s a bummer that’s fallen to the wayside for AAA games. It’s rather get a dozen indie games of differing genres than get these bigger hit games and a couple of hit or miss indie games. It’s a bummer how humble has changed.

Thebazilly , in Kingdom Hearts III killed my love for the saga

I’d say the intervening… what was it… 15 year?.. gap is what killed my love for the game series. I was in middle school when I played the first one, and I never even bothered with KH3. The story was painfully overwrought by the end of KH2, and I knew that tacking on another sequel wasn’t going to fix it. Nomura is going to Nomura.

It’s a shame because the series was one of my favorites back in the day. At least the soundtrack will always be good.

OctopusKurwa , in Kingdom Hearts III killed my love for the saga

The decision to drop the FF characters was such a huge mistake

Vodulas , in Thoughts on Dave the Diver? [No Spoilers]

I did not play EA, and overall I am enjoying it. The issues I have are the random mechanics that are thrown in as one time things like chase scenes and a stealth sections. Those are plain not fun, and could have been something else entirely.

Potential spoilers for the main story ahead!

spoilerThe portrayal of the Sea People seems very Chinese caricature at a few points. Plus the quests they give are kind of not fun. I could do without them altogether honestly.

Kindajustlikewhat ,

As a Chinese person I actually think they’re more Korean-inspired, not Chinese. And the devs are Korean, so it doesn’t seem disrespectful.

iamhazel , in Gaming often fetishises the new but many great things exist in the past, so let's strap into our time machines and talk about our favourite games released before say 2010?
  • OpenTTD
  • Puzzle Pirates
  • Mario Golf on GBA
  • Bike or Die, Space Traders, and Fish Tycoon on Palm
kuchaibee , in In praise of the short narrative video game...

So glad to see Roadwarden mentioned! Another short game I played recently is Paradise Marsh. Its not really text-focused (it’s more dialogue and only some snippets of lore pieces) but it’s a short simple game with a very nice story. It also has birds that make poems!

dynamism OP ,

I’ll have to check it out! Sounds intriguing!

TimeShift came out in 2007, and that game was the bomb. Loved the concept with the suits that can control time, and the game play felt really smooth. Nothing beats freezing time and grabbing the enemies’ weapons from them and shooting them with it.
