shipped a local multiplayer naval game Overall Reviews: Overwhelmingly Positive (523 reviews) : I had a lot of fun playing this game with my sist er and cousin.
seems like my previous comment didn’t get posted
I’ve always loved Galactic Battlegrounds because RTS are fun. Rebellion is another great one that another commenter mentioned. I was also a fan of Jedi Knight and Jedi Academy and replaced them on switch a year or two back.
Oh wow, kudos for sitting down and writing this piece out. Damn, that’s a long post.
But seriously though, all I could think of when I “skimmed” through the text was that you got too obsessed with the building blocks of a story and realised that you are critical towards that they’re all the same shape and/or made by the same material. So you stand very close to the wall and squint instead of backing up a few paces to get a good view of the actual construct in it’s entirety.
Relax and just be happy that we have the luxury in this day and age to appreciate gaming as a medium. Or don’t, whatever makes you happy :)
I really like this point. If you look closely most churches are built with bricks and wood, but still create beautiful structures. As I was reading through the list I was thinking a lot about games that did points good and badly. Tropes are tropes for a reason (check out OSP trope talks if you want break down on how specific tropes can be used well or poorly)
You can even get an item in Elden Ring called the Twiggy Cracked Tear about a third of the way through that lets your Physick flask grant the same effects as a Sacrificial Twig for 3 minutes. Once you get that, the stress of losing Runes can be greatly diminished.
Simply drink it prior to crossing a fog wall or at a difficult point on the path to Rune retrieval.
If that’s not enough, and you’re on PC, you can download a simple mod off Nexus which eliminates Rune loss on death entirely.
Zelda is still my GOTY but story-wise, FFXVI is easily my favorite. Played Bayo 3 pretty recently so playing with the new combat style is quite refreshing compared to my mild disappointment with that game. I’ve been doing every side quest- some are better than others but definitely worth it to do them.
I just love that every chapter/boss fight is climactic enough to be the final, only to be outdone by the next one 3-4 hours later!
I’m in the sidequest lull before Titan right now. (Which reminds me a bit of FFXIV, but not nearly as bad!) I do like that the sidequests make you feel more attached to the hideaway and the minor characters. The game does need the moments of quiet to contrast with the huge action setpieces.
I’m really excited for the first season, especially that they’ll start us with the altars and map cleared. That’s always annoying to do on a new playthrough. Now I just need to get my current character to tier 3 and finish hunting down the rest of the altars.
There’s a lot I love with the game and a lot of things I wish could be improved.
Music is phenomenal. Lots of great stuff, including lovely little nostalgic riffs and exciting new pieces.
I’m enjoying the combat system. I haven’t played many games with this kind of action-oriented system, but I have found it easy to get in to and satisfying to explore new combos and maneuvers. I do feel like some of the battles overstay their welcome a bit, perhaps because I’m not as much of an aficionado for these systems nor as adept.
I found it hard to get into the story at first, but it’s definitely “Final Fantasy worthy” if that makes sense. I am enjoying as everything unfurls and putting the connections together.
I like how the world feels vast but manageable. Before this, I was playing a lot of FF7 Remake and FFXV before that. This seems to be finding a nice balance where something like FF7R has everything in tight levels and corridors and FFXV was vast and open, but it felt like a lot of the openness was uninteresting (like, they had to give you a car to get through it all at a quasi-interesting pace). With the different map segments, it narrows down to the more interesting places to explore, while also opening up to more detail and still giving a sense of a larger world.
I wish the economy and crafting system was better/more interesting. I’m not sure how far into the game I am, but I’ve felt like gil has been mostly useless since the second weapon I got, and crafting has been dull enough that I don’t really care about or track what components I’ve gathered up.
All-in-all, loving the game and excited to keep going. I feel like there’s still a lot of story to go and that’s awesome because I also feel like I’ve put a lot of time into it already.
If like the “beat your head against the wall until you win”, but dont care too much about the rpg elements and losing your progress, Furi is a great game.
The game is JUST boss fights, so there’s no trekking back to the boss every time you die. But the actual bosses are brutal, multi-stage journeys that scratch that same itch that Souls games do.
