tombuben , in Where to even start with Final Fantasy?

There’s no “final fantasy universe”. Every numbered entry (or its remake) is a good entry point. It’s not that each game tends to be somewhat separate from the series, each of the games is completely separate. They don’t share characters or even worlds. Some are high fantasy, some are almost sci-fi.

I’d recommend the FF7 Remake. It’s old enough for you to grab it at a cheaper price, and new enough to have pretty accessible game mechanics.

The SNES FF games (FFs 4, 5, and 6) are all great, and the recent “Pixel Remaster” releases have brought them to current systems. If you can appreciate old school sprite graphics, start here!

I don’t have hundreds of hours

Don’t start with XIV then!

So what is the most recent game in the series that I can start with that is worth it to play and wouldn’t confuse a newcomer?

All of the FF games – baring the ones that are explicitly sequels, like X2 – are totally separate from each other, you can jump in anywhere. At most you might miss some references or easter eggs.

If you want the most recent then, that’d be XVI, although I’d personally recommend looking up what the gameplay is like in the different games and starting wherever you feel you’ll have the most fun! There are some weirder ones out there, like crystal chronicles (my own first final fantasy game) and tactics, so you have a lot of options!

Hah, no kidding. Before I read that I was going to mention it given it’s completely free up until the end of Heavensward, but given OP’s disclaimer and how many people get filtered by the slow burn of ARR it’s probably the worst suggestion in the case.

… or maybe that’s FFXI (much as I’m loving it!).

I wonder how many hundreds of hours I have in that game now… I’ll /playtime next time I log in. I’m still in the patches after Shadowbringers, but I’ve also been known to focus more on roulettes she such than actually making progress in the main story

liminis ,

Hah, snap. I’m also somewhere around the end of 5.3, and have far too many hours logged (comes with levelling all jobs to somewhere between 70 and 81).

Just use console commands to up your level / stats. The big thing for me was knowing which enemies to fight and which ones to run from. Because if they outlevel you THEN you run into that HP sponge thing.

I really enjoyed road 96 and the prequel. It took me a bit to warm up to the prequel’s skating thing but I ended up really enjoying my time with it. I am looking forward to seeing what they do next in that setting.

Some games get on sale every other month usually the indies. First party games are rarely on sale and usually with not much discount. Smash gone one or twice on sale MK11 went like 20 times already. Is not a bad console to hack up and as it’s nearing it’s support end, it wouldn’t be a bad option since it’s not completely confirmed the library you brought will carry. Although many think it will do cause ps and xbox did.

dino , in in my opinion, '98 was the best year for game releases. What's yours?

2023 -Street Fighter 6 -being able to play Hunt: Showdown on Linux -Cyberpunk '77: Phantom Liberty -Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure -BattleBit -games I haven’t played yet, but looking forward: Zelda Totk(?)

Binding of Isaac Repentance is my main game at the moment. I’m also trying to squeeze some Need for Speed Underground 2 on the PS2. Gaming is no longer my primary hobby so it’s no more than an hour or two per day. Still, looking forward to the other NFS titles on the PS2. I might try to finish the first Underground and go for 100% on both before moving on.

Vestria , in I finally got a Switch! What now?

If you like Harvest Moon, the new games are trash but the Story of Seasons games are really good for scratching that itch.

Metroid Dread and the Metroid Prime Remaster are both excellent.

In spite of their technical limitations and lazy graphical fidelity, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are legitimately fun games.

DioField Chronicle and Triangle Strategy if you like strategy games.

Octopath Traveller 1 and 2, Bravely Default II (the first game was a 3DS title), and the Xenogears games if you like story heavy RPGs.

There are decent multi-platform ports like The Witcher 3 and Persona 5 Royal if you missed them, as well.

Caffeinated_Capybara , in I finally got a Switch! What now?

I really enjoyed metroid dread and hollow knight. I also played a fair bit of hades and going under. Dredge is also really good. I wouldn’t worry too much about sales unless it’s a first party game. It’s really the first party games that don’t really go on sale often.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I’ll be checking these all out

followthewhiterabbit ,

The Metroid Prime Remake was beautiful to see on my Switch. Really appreciated playing through that. I had to have a online walkthrough on hand, but that’s just me!

Well worth the price.
