I still don’t get how to actually use peertube beyond links that other people post here on Lemmy.

I haven’t used it much either as often times the instances I would make accounts to would go offline on me

You can use sepiasearch.org to search across most PeerTube instances, and you can use NewPipe to view videos too (you have to add each instance you care about manually)

VanHalbgott ,

Me neither. The platform doesn’t have an app for that matter. I use YouTube instead just fine.

It’s a federated system just like Lemmy, Mastodon, …

(One of the) first step would be to find an Instance that you might like to join. joinpeertube.org/instances

Then, an App that can also handle peertube would be e.g. NewPipe - which is also a very good 3rd party app for YouTube and alike. newpipe.net

It's a shame there's practically no adoption. I'd love to see more content on the network.

Yeah, video is expensive to host. I know it’s distributed tho.

Love these news, I almost shed a tear

In terms of becoming a real competitor of YouTube, this is a huge step. Accessibility is a must.

Amazing news!

threelonmusketeers ,

Could PeerTube have crowdsourced captions? IIRC, YouTube used to have this, but removed it.

aasatru ,
@aasatru@kbin.earth avatar

I guess it could, but implementing it in a decentralized system is probably more complicated at this point than having computer generated ones.

threelonmusketeers ,

True, but computer generated captions aren’t perfect, and having a way for viewers to make corrections would be useful.

aasatru ,
@aasatru@kbin.earth avatar

Also true. There's a lot of enthusiasm in the Fediverse about writing alt texts, so who knows! It's a lot more work, but similar ballpark.

threelonmusketeers ,

I feel like Cunningham’s law can be leveraged here. If someone spots a mistake in a computer generated caption and there is an option to correct it, someone will correct it!

Any corrections could also be used to train (hopefully open source) speech-to-text software.

aasatru ,
@aasatru@kbin.earth avatar

Yeah, having an option to suggest corrections to captions would probably be much more popular than actually writing them from scratch. I doubt it will be high on the list of priorities, but it would be a neat feature for sure.
