I really like Fast Draw. I wanted the app pages like Nova has, and personally didn’t really need any more than that. This one works like a charm!

Does anyone know of a good open-source launcher? I know there’s FastDraw and Olauncher, but I wouldn’t mind having some more alternatives to try out just to find one that truly works best for me.

AlpacaChariot ,

KISS is great if you want something really simple that works well.

ock88 , in End of an era: Nova Launcher's parent company lays off practically everyone

I’ve been working on a launcher for a while now, do help me test it out!

Features include:

  • Widget stacks (with auto scroll)
  • Swipe up and swipe down to launch different apps
  • Display app drawer icons as tiles or a list
  • Individually resize home screen icons, for mixed-size icon layouts
  • Freely position and resize a widget or icon
  • Frosted glass background for widgets (experimental)
  • App drawer folders
  • Fade a widget
  • Separate layouts for different screens for foldables
  • Tap a folder to launch its first app (swipe to open folder)
  • Assign a nickname to an app for instant app search and launch (e.g. searching “ff” launches Firefox instantly)
  • Lots of custom animations and haptics

Planned features include:

  • Profile switching with Tasker support
  • Square tiles for app drawer
  • Swipe to open a widget pop up

PraiseTheSoup ,

Can you group the app drawer by letter so that I can immediately jump to ‘S’ to launch Sync for Lemmy? It’s pretty much the entire reason I can’t move away from Microsoft Launcher. I feel this is an essential feature, and I’ve tried basically every launcher I can find.

ock88 ,

Do you mean the A-Z bar on the right of the drawer in Microsoft Launcher?

fern ,

Not open source, a little disappointed. I’ll give it a try when it is

catloaf , in Cannot print/print to pdf local files without uploading to Google Drive

I don’t have the google docs app installed, but I checked the sheets app, and it’s got a print option under the share and export menu, and it offers to print to PDF.

If that’s not working for you for whatever reason, you might need a separate app.

Generalteetius01 OP ,

Thank you for the workaround, Sheets would not open the file though. I ended up dl Libera FD to share and save as a PDF that way. It worked out in the end, though I wish docs was more local friendly.

absquatulate , in Custom ROMs have had just about enough of being Android's second-class citizens

The Play Integrity API was never meant to detect fraudulent apps, but to make it easy for google to become the arbiter of what’s trustworthy and what’s not. They knew this of course, but this lawsuit indicates they might have something solid to stand on. Good luck GrapheneOS!

Kushan , in Custom ROMs have had just about enough of being Android's second-class citizens
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

I feel like a huge aspect that this article and the GrapheneOS developers are overlooking is DRM content.

They’re focusing on user security for a user’s own data, but there’s a whole other side to it with companies wanting to protect their own data - think Netflix and the like who use the same systems to ensure that nobody’s been tampering with the device as a way of bypassing the copy protection of their media.

Now I’m not saying I support DRM at all, I’m very firmly in the camp of being able to own the media you purchase without restriction, but my point is that it’s not as simple as Google being dismissive, lazy or ignorant but rather there’s a lot of commercial sensitivity at play and if Google fucks it up, they could potentially lose certification of the entire android ecosystem.

skullgiver ,
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

GrapheneOS specifically is probably fine when it comes to DRM. They sign their builds with keys that only they posses, so any custom forks would not get the advantages running an official version of GrapheneOS would gain if they were to pass the hardware verification API.

News outlets like to group projects like GrapheneOS and LineageOS together as “custom ROMs”, but GrapheneOS is much more than that. And in all honesty, some of the stuff LineageOS pulls to get their software working on some models shouldn’t be passing any checks. The projects released on forums like XDA are particularly bad, some of those will even disable Android’s security sandbox all together because it’s hard to make that work as intended.

Obviously, custom ROMs should not be trusted by apps where hardware security is essential. However, in cases like GrapheneOS, it’s hard to defend putting hashes of old, abandoned firmware with dozens of kernel exploits on the whitelist, but refusing to put GrapheneOS on there as well. Especially as GrapheneOS is more secure than Google’s own ROM, according to forensic hacking company Cellebrite, which can’t hack Google’s phones with Graphene but can get in with Google’s original software.

polyduekes ,

i don’t think what grapheneOS wants is to be able to spoof or bypass play integrity, they just wanna be able to implement it as well just like oems do so if someone will tamper the system in graphene as well, play integrity should blow off and drm content will be safe

Zak ,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

could potentially lose certification of the entire android ecosystem

Certification by whom?

The Netflix app is older (2011) than Safetynet (2014?). Google probably didn’t need to provide remote attestation, but making non-Google Android unusable for most people is good for their bottom line.

Kushan ,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

Netflix being older is hardly relevant to this discussion.

Maybe you’re unaware, but the higher quality streams are only available on devices netflix has certified. You can still use netflix on GrapheneOS but you won’t get that quality, it’ll be downgraded.

This is a common problem for cheaper Chinese devices as well.

Zak ,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

What would have happened if Google never created an attestation system for Android? Would Netflix give up such a large market?

Netflix can downgrade Chinese phones that aren’t common in the west and third-party ROMs because those represent a tiny fraction of their potential customer base. I doubt they’d be inclined to do so for all of Android.

Kushan ,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

Who said anything about Netflix giving up a market, they just offer a worse service. But hey, iPhones offer a premium service, right?

Zak ,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

It’s one thing to place limits on a few Chinese phones that have low market share outside China (Netflix is not available inside China), but only offering low-quality streams on the world’s most popular smartphone OS would surely have a significant impact on subscription numbers. Netflix may have even signed contracts with content providers requiring them to meet certain DRM standards.

I believe the situation would be different if Google hadn’t built a remote attestation system for Android. Netflix might have had to renegotiate a contract or two, but underserving a huge fraction of the market isn’t viable long-term.

user ,

Graphene already supports Winevine L1 without Play Integrity. It has nothing to do with DRM, its a seperate system.

WhoIsRich , in Is there any way to easily size pictures for android wallpaper yet?
@WhoIsRich@lemmy.world avatar

What phone are you using? On Samsung you just open the picture in the native Gallery app, tap the three dots menu in the corner and choose Set Wallpaper.

If you’re not using Samsung then I would expect that brands picture browser to have a similar feature.

Varyk OP , (edited )

google pixel six.

I can get into the wallpaper option, but whatever picture I choose even if it’s a screenshot of my exact screen, is blown up to about 3x proportion and i cannot make it smaller from within the wallpaper app, I have to artificially blow up the canvas size in an image editor and then try to use it in the stock wallpaper app

atrielienz ,

Your original way still works for me on the pixel 8. I have to tap the picture to make the floating menus go away but then I can still screenshot it.

Varyk OP ,

Okay, sounds like another pixel bug then, i won’t go crazy trying to solve it.

my phone had a bunch of those.

like, does the now playing feature work for you?

mine basically never works, and then every other week in the supermarket it’ll be like " hey did you know that this song is…" one time and then go back into hibernation.

atrielienz ,

I hope that’s all it is. I can upload one of mine to my computer in about half an hour and see what the aspect ratio is. Give you the proper dimensions. But I don’t know how valuable that will be since it’s kind of a hassle and you’re looking for an on phone solution.

Varyk OP ,

My screenshots are all the native Pixel 6 res, 1080x2400, but the res dont matter i guess, my wallpapers app only wants things a thousand pixels wider than native res and wont take no for an answer.

ItsComplicated , in Cannot print/print to pdf local files without uploading to Google Drive

I could be misunderstanding your intention. Can you share it to Samsung notes and save as PDF from there?

Generalteetius01 OP ,

I didn’t try that, but I will. I was worried about losing the formatting.

CombatWombat1212 , in End of an era: Nova Launcher's parent company lays off practically everyone

NOOOOO

onlinepersona , in Custom ROMs have had just about enough of being Android's second-class citizens

Google is just trying to be Malus but on multiple vendors’ hardware and across all variations of iOS (if iOS allowed forks). Obviously that’s a problem and it wouldn’t surprise me if Epic joined the lawsuit. Their third-party app store would have a problem installing authentic apps from the Google Play Store if no google services ran on the phone.

The EU is doing stuff against monopolies and talking about digital sovereignty, but EU countries are still releasing the opensource software only on the google playstore and ios app store - that’s not sovereign.

Very curious to see where this goes.

I still use it. Where did you move to?

clover ,

I used to use nova and switched to Niagara a couple of months ago. It very different but super sleek

Vibi ,

It was my go to launcher for years, but this weekend I decided it was time to see what else there was. I ended up on Niagara Launcher and have been liking it! Took about a day to get used to it- it’s definitely different. There’s not really an app drawer, and as far as I can tell there’s only one home screen and one place for widgets (you can have more than one, but you flip through them). I like how simple it is and how quickly I can get to everything.

Sunny ,

I loved Niagara when I used to use it. Just wish the premium version didnt swallow my whole wallet… God damn that price is steep for a launcher…

Vibi ,

I feel that! I ended up buying the premium license. I figure if I use it as long as I use Nova, it’ll pay for itself. Also will hopefully help the creator and prevent them from selling it to some advertising firm.

mjhelto ,

I thought Niagra’s premium was a monthly or yearly subscription.

Vibi , (edited )

They must have changed it! There was the option for a monthly subscription as well as a lifetime purchase.

mjhelto ,

I’ll take a look again. Thanks!

SkabySkalywag ,

I agree. At first I chuckled that the App literally asks you to give it a week with Premium to get used to it. They were right though, once I let go of comparing it to Nova, I got pretty used to making folders and widgets. They have a good product and they earned my money/support for the lifetime price.

curbstickle ,

Lawnchair hasn’t had a new release in like 6 years.

Personally, I’m using Kvaesitso (available on fdroid). github.com/MM2-0/Kvaesitso

It’s the best I’ve found for me post-nova

alkaliv2 ,

Lawnchair is being updated it is just only being updated on its Github page.

Stovetop ,

The Play Store link (Lawnchair v2) has not been updated in years. There is a ground-up rewrite (Lawnchair v14) which is being worked on slowly but is currently only able to be sideloaded from their site, and is apparently still missing most of the features from v2.

From what I gather, though, development is happening at a snails pace with “when I feel like it” updates.

Lucidlethargy ,

This launcher is not as good as Nova.

calamitycastle ,

I went back to action launcher which I really like.

I basically have one home screen with links to my most used stuff.

It has covers which I believe originated here but was later possible on Nova. Basically you make folders of apps that you can tap to open, but you can set that to swipe instead so that the tap just opens the first app in the folder

So for example I listen to podcasts way more often than music from my phone, so I have a folder for audio where I can tap to open podcasts or swipe to open the folder and get to music.

I then have a slide in drawer that has the weather and my calendar and that’s basically it. Very rarely need to go to the main app list once this is set up. I will likely never change this as I don’t really use that many apps regularly.

jaxiiruff ,

I switched to smart launcher and bought lifetime cause I feel like its actually a really great option I never heard of or tried until I stopped using nova. Lawnchair is good too but for now im sticking with smart launcher.
