Just don't update the app from Play Store, it's not automatic, you have to chose to change its source to the Play store

how about no

MangoPenguin , in 10 years of android and I never managed to share files via WiFi direct
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I use localsend, if I need to share between devices while out and about I just turn on hotspot to create a local Wi-Fi network.

All the sharing tools built into android are garbage, none work properly.

punseye , in 10 years of android and I never managed to share files via WiFi direct

I like LocalSend because it can send folders without zipping them, but it did fail for me once when I was sending a folder with 7000 pics.

But LocalSend isn’t a direct option like airdrop, devices need to be connected to a same hotspot.

Is this an effect of Epic winning that lawsuit against Google and wanting them to provide access from third-party app stores? Or is just typical Google fuckery?

Solemarc , in Has the AOSP project failed consumers?

The AOSP is a huge success and phones are really only the tip of the iceberg, android runs everywhere and is basically responsible for the mainstream adoption of “smart” devices.

It’s a small OS that runs on basically anything and you can stick it on most computers regardless of how strange the hardware setup is.

Is it perfect? No, as a project android is basically maintained by Google alone and Google obviously doesn’t think it’s perfect, or fuschia wouldn’t exist.

Majestix , in Google Play Store redesign adds Search tab, persistent bottom bar [U]

One more click to search…

Which means one more screen to show ads - this is why they do it…

Evotech ,

Such an anti feature. I remember google removed the url bar and joined it with the search bar back in the day. Now it’s full regression time.

kellenoffdagrid ,
@kellenoffdagrid@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

They could’ve so easily solved this by making it just immediately jump to the search bar on tap, or hide that feature behind a long press like some other apps do if they’re really wanting to push people towards trending searches. I appreciate that it’s within thumb’s reach now but this is a pretty lackluster implementation

Melonpoly , in Google Play Store redesign adds Search tab, persistent bottom bar [U]

I hate persistent bottom/ status bars.

JASN_DE , in eSim or Physical Sim?

Physical leaves the option of a second one for travel or similar.

Majestix OP ,

Good Point, thanks

wildbus8979 ,

Also a lot easier to transfer to another phone if yours breaks

iamjackflack ,

Don’t android phones have 2 esims?

JASN_DE ,

Not all of them.

iamjackflack ,

Oh ok, thought that was a standard thing. My bad

LaggyKar ,
@LaggyKar@programming.dev avatar

You can have a physical SIM alongside an eSIM. These days you may have to have at least one of them be an eSIM, as many phones only have one physical SIM slot.

JASN_DE ,

Yes, I know. Many phones will also be restricted to one active esim profile at once.

JohnWorks , in eSim or Physical Sim?

I want to start using eSIM but I keep hearing about issues with tethering and the phone reporting normal data usage as tethered so I’ve always avoided it due to that. My fear is at some point carriers charging a fee to switch the eSIM from one phone to another.

Iceblade02 , in eSim or Physical Sim?

I greatly prefer physical sim, just because I can control it. If I want it out of my phone, it’s out, if I want to switch phones, I switch. Easy peasy. I really don’t see any advantage to an eSim apart from maybe faster delivery.

essell ,

The other advantage is getting a second sim in a phone which otherwise can’t have one, only times I’ve used them.

rainynight65 ,

You can disable and even delete an eSIM-profile. Then it’s just a dead chip. If your provider is halfway decent, you can recover a deleted eSIM-profile as well.

When I traveled last year, having eSIM-capability in my phone was extremely convenient. I picked two providers, one as the primary and one as a backup in case there were problems with the first one. No juggling with the SIM-tray and different nano SIMs.

Iceblade02 ,

Hmm, that’s actually a decent point. I’ve two regular sim slots, so it isn’t really an issue for me.

Imacat , in eSim or Physical Sim?

Some phones will let you save your physical sim as an eSIM.

ozymandias117 , in eSim or Physical Sim?

eSIM requires proprietary google services to activate, so if you’re planning on messing with ROMs I find physical to be easier
