liontigerwings , in Open-source apps are consistently better than the average closed source app on the playstore (opinion)

I’ve been on iOS for 4 months. These are the things that make me miss android. My iphone got stolen from hand last week so I had an opportunity to go back to android (and save a ton of money) but decided to continue to ride it out on iphone for a bit. I should stop looking at android stuff so I don’t get too jealous.

Is there any Foss stuff on iOS without jailbreak?

sunglocto OP ,

I guess you can use AltStore. I heard you have to renew the apps every 7 days, though

Dohnakun , in My OnePlus 8 pro finally crapped out, need new phone suggestions

Not the OnePlus 9. Touch sensitivity is crap. Fingerprint sensor is crap. I got it for community support, but am disappointed in the hardware.

Maruki_Hurakami , in Open-source apps are consistently better than the average closed source app on the playstore (opinion)

Definitely check out Obtanium if using apps from GitHub.

Dougtron007 , in My OnePlus 8 pro finally crapped out, need new phone suggestions

If you want something you could throw a different ROM on you could always try a used pixel 6 or newer with lineage OS. What kind of carrier compatibility do you need?

Stargazer8224 , in What's your email client of choice?

Big fan of outlook tbh, it works well and both on iPad and android

FierroGamer , in Recommend any OFFLINE Android Games with no ads?

Have you tried looking on itch.io? I recently got a few games from there (some are hosted on the play store but not all)

Only bad thing about browsing is that 80% of the games seem to be dating sims or visual novels (which is fine if you’re looking for that, but annoying if you’re not)

Edit: infidhells seems really fun, but haven’t had time to play much, to use all the gameplay features it’s worth playing with the sound on (though it has accessibility options for playing without audio).

Thunderbird!

andyMFK , in How many apps are installed on your phone other than system apps? List your top ten daily used apps.

Desktop = Thunderbird

Android= AquaMail

fookinrat , in As Twitter flounders, Mastodon refreshes its official app for Android users

I’m using Tusky for now. It has more customization options than the official app. One thing I don’t like about the official app is that everything looks gigantic.

I like and use Tusky on my phone, and it also works as a Pixelfed client. But it’s not very good on tablets (in landscape). It not only doesn’t maximize the width of the screen, but you can’t scroll the feed from those unused sides of the screen. And one UI feature that Tusky is missing is the indented thread-depth lines that help you keep track of all the different reply sub-threads.

dutchkimble , in What's your email client of choice?

I’ve probably tried every client out there and repeatedly keep exploring, but I always end back on Newton

F-droid is also my preferred source of apps. But the search function is quite bad. I often search the repository from the website on my PC, to find that is in there and then look for apps with exact names on the F-droid app.

shortwavesurfer , in Open-source apps are consistently better than the average closed source app on the playstore (opinion)

Agree with this totally. The near lack of trackers, disclosure of any that are in apps, no ads, and easy access to code for bug reporting or fixing makes fdroid apps tons better.

running4croissants , in 9 things iOS 17 copied from Android

I wish it would copy the gesture, especially the super easy to use back swipe gesture that doesn’t just work on the left side in certain ways and on certain apps.

samus7070 ,

That back gesture on android is a system level gesture. On iOS it is an app level thing. If it doesn’t work it’s because the app developer was lazy when they made their own custom navigation controller. File bugs and leave low rating reviews.

KilgoreTheTrout , in Pls Help me decide on the most cost effective phone when my biggest deciding factor is a nice camera but I'm not paying $800 for a dang phone

The best value proposition a used Pixel. Get 5 years of security patches, much better point and shoot camera for basic everyday stuff.

And 40% cheaper at MSRP compared to Samsung and they don’t have mid-range phones with bad chips like a54.

Pixel 6 Pro can be found on the resale market for like $275 bucks. It’ll still get three more years of software support. r a Pixel 6a for 200 on Amazon renewed will get four more years.

You just can’t get the same kind of value with Samsung because once you’re down to 300 400 bucks you’re stuck with the a series. The a series just doesn’t retain the stuff that makes Samsung worth it like dex.
