Why so thick?

The 4000 mAh battery is probably a contributing factor. I’d probably buy this with a smaller battery, assuming the bootloader is easily unlockable.

Wait… there’s no headphone jack? Alright, keeping my Pixel 4a for another year.

4Ah is tiny. No way it needs that thickness.

Zak ,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

That’s only “tiny” because phones today are huge. The Pixel 4a, which passes for small today at 144x69mm has a 3140 mAh battery.

The Jelly Max is 129x63mm, smaller than the iPhone 12 Mini’s 132x64mm. That phone has a 2227 mAh battery.

I still don’t think that explains it.

Pixel 4a gang checking in. We should create a club!

Drusas ,

I wish mine hadn't died on me a couple years ago. The newer a models are so much bigger.

Zak ,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

What killed it?

Pixel 9 is supposed to be 6". This is the “correct” size IMO.

Pixel 4a is not getting security updates so I’d probably move on ASAP if I were you.

Zak ,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think there’s a single correct size for a phone. Different people want different things; many want huge phones with screens over 7" while some of us think the Pixel 4a is too big.

My phone got an update on July 18. LineageOS is great.

limerod ,

How else were they gonna cram all the stuff in a 5-inch body? My current phone is twice as thin but is much large at 6.8inches.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You ever seen a iPhone Mini?

limerod ,

Last I knew according to GSMarena. IPhone 13 mini was 5.4inches had a 2438mah battery, did not have a telephoto camera, did not support sdcard slot, IR remote, 66w fast charging.

This is smaller has a larger battery and has more features. So…

The thing that basically comes with a pre-cracked screen out of the box?

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I don’t understand what that has to do with anything.

wingsfortheirsmiles ,

Would’ve backed but for the lack of 3.5mm jack. I get the even greater fight for space in a phone this small plus the prevalence of TWS/Bluetooth headphones but it’s something that I personally won’t compromise on

machinaeZER0 ,

I’d be interested to know their long term support in general, myself - have Jelly phones gotten OS updates in the past, or at least security updates? Looks like there aren’t any Lineage builds for their phones, which is unfortunate.

Either way, this looks like a big leap in power and aesthetics for them, and I’m intrigued! Ticks most boxes for me, albeit lacking a headphone jack. Happy to see they’ve hit their funding goal!

No OS updates, unless promised at release. Some security updates, though. They’re GPL violators, and don’t release kernel sources, which makes 3rd party OS images harder.

Devices are generally easily repairable,they sell spares, and their support also sends you parts during warranty period if you ask - I just received a new battery for my titan slim.

machinaeZER0 ,

This is all helpful, thank you!

limerod ,

Wow, the specs are not half bad. 12GB RAM with 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage which is also expandable alongside a decent Dimensity 7300 decent 100MP + 8MP 3.4x telephoto, with a half decent 4000mah 66w fast wired charging running android 14.

I expected another underpowered hardware like most small phones before. All this for $259 cannot complain. If I was for a small phones in the market, I would definitely consider this.

AbidanYre ,

Unihertz in particular? No.

Kickstarter in general? If you’re lucky, you’ll get whatever you paid for about 3 years after the original promised date.
