mnmalst ,

I am in session 7 of my rewatch, so this was the first connection I made a well. 🙂

mnmalst ,

Does anybody know for how many years this device gets system / security updates?

mnmalst ,

Pixel 4a checking in. 🙂

mnmalst ,

Sadly there are no options. I don’t really need a new phone, the hardware is still fine for me but not getting any updates sucks. At some point I might have to bite the bullet and get the 8a or something.

mnmalst , (edited )

We, or I might have to accept that a species, no matter how intelligent on an individual basis, is doomed to go extinct when the collective intelligence is not able to mitigate long term consequences.

mnmalst ,

I have the same as a secondary device. It’s getting slow tho. :)

mnmalst ,

That’s exactly what we need. Religious nutjobs meddling in the potentially dark AI future.

mnmalst ,

FYI: /etc/grub.d/10_linux should not be edited directly for permanent changes since those changes get replaced when grub is updated.

Use /etc/default/grub for permanent changes.

mnmalst ,

Indeed, just wanted to make sure people are aware. :)

Cheers

In addition, we’re going to develop the tools that give people choices other than the big three.

This sentence at the very end makes me very curious. Is this a hint for a Thunderbird mail service or something similar?

On the one hand I would love to have a mail service offered by the Thunderbird team that would also fund Thunderbird development. On the other hand it’s probably not a good idea to split the development resources too thin.

mnmalst ,

I am aware, I am using an alternative service myself for several years now. My point was that having an email service that helps fund Thunderbird would be nice. Furthermore, more alternative that ethically align with my views are always good.

Yes and they implement EVERYTHING in house. In case you haven’t heard they also started implementing a browser engine from scratch ladybird.dev just for fun. It kinda took off and they even got some nice donations, just to keep it going and see where it leads.

The “founders” youtube channel is quit interesting. Especially the monthly update videos if you want to keep up to date with the latest developments. inv.tux.pizza/channel/UC3ts8coMP645hZw9JSD3pqQ

mnmalst ,

The browser was at first only available in serentyOS itself but lately is available as a stand alone program running on other OSs as well. It’s still pretty early days, I am exited to see where all this leads tho!

mnmalst ,

It’s a work in progress. Most sites won’t work but some do. Check out this latest development update video: inv.tux.pizza/watch?v=giq5iXJntgQ&t=911 That link leads directly to the “demo segment” where he opens some sites.

mnmalst ,

Honestly, I have no idea what you are referring to either. Would you mind sending me a message if you don’t want to go into detail in public?

mnmalst ,

Not sure why you get immediately so confrontational. Of course I know those things exist and can be a problem but it wasn’t at all clear to me that you were talking about those things. That’s why I asked for clarification.

I get it, some people try to trigger other by asking obvious questions but don’t assume the worst in all of us.

Have a look at www.picoctf.org

They have a lot of challenges and resources to get you started.

For all the doubters that Linux gaming is smoother and faster. (video.hardlimit.com)

A video for any doubters that Linux gaming is better than Windows in which it DESTROYS Windows by 25% in AC Odyssey. To put it in perspective, 25% improvement is like getting a new GPU. You can save $600 and instead use something like OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for free....

mnmalst ,

There is absolutely no way 25% is realistic in this scenario, it’s most likely, as you said, a certain characteristic/feature is interpreted/skipped/handled differently by WINE.

How can I find the reason my PC crashes?

Lately my PC has started crashing while it plays videos. It freezes completely, screen frozen and not responding to any input (keyboard, mouse), I mean I cannot change TTY (alt + ctrl + F(1-2-…)), and it cannot even respond to alt + PrntScr + REISUB. I have to force power off by holding down the power button....

mnmalst ,

I was in a similar situation not too long ago and couldn’t find anything to fix it either at first. One thing that was high on my list was changing my PSU since a defect or weak one often seems to be a problem in such cases. Besides a general hardware failure of course. If it’s the hardware that could be anything really. Motherboard, RAM, GPU, PSU. PSU is the easiest to switch tho, so if you go that route I would try that first.

Anyways, I never had to do this cause in my case, believe it or not, a BIO update fixed my problem. I am still not 100% sure what happened but I think the update fixed the GPU voltage distribution or something similar.

Hope that help at least a little bit.

mnmalst ,

Also if it is an 60fps video I start hearing the fans spinning like mad

ok this is definitely not normal. Check the temperature of your GPU. Is the GPU physically clean? Is the air flow ok? Do you have the chance to test with a different GPU? An overheating GPU can definitely lead to the described symptoms.

Who here uses a less popular Linux distribution? What made you choose it?

Hey fellow Linux enthusiasts! I’m curious to know if any of you use a less popular, obscure or exotic Linux distribution. What motivated you to choose that distribution over the more mainstream ones? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any unique features or benefits that drew you to your chosen distribution.

mnmalst ,

Also: libredirect.github.io

Browser extension with support for a lot of different frontends.

I wish lemmy would block amp links flat out.

mnmalst ,

no problem, you always learn something. :)

Update handling after rebasing Fedora Silverblue

So I am trying out fedora silverblue and recently rebased it to uBlue to get access to hardware decoding for non-free codecs and for some QoL improvements. Before rebasing, I used to get both system updates(update to image that silverblue is based on) and flatpak updates through the gui package manager(gnome-software in this...

mnmalst ,

One of the main features of silverblue is auto updates in the background. You don’t need a cronjob or a graphical tool to achieve this, it’s build into the distribution.

Have a look here: …github.io/…/rpm-ostree-automatic-updates.html

You just have to change one entry in /etc/rpm-ostreed.conf and reload the systemd service.

mnmalst ,

I only used ublue images for a little bit but on the one which offered xfce at that time it was available. I think it’s part of the main image design, so I see no reason it not being available. You can easily check tho.

mnmalst ,

Your xargs comment is still wrong tho. It deletes ALL but the most recent two files.

I am excited about all the changes coming to our DEs!

I like to watch videos published by Nick from The Linux Experiment. In the latest video he talks about the developments in the new Cosmic, The quality of life touches and polishing of KDE, and the apps coming to gnome (like snoop). It is all really cool and I can’t wait to try them all :)

mnmalst ,

Laughs in his never changing xfce 😄 I enjoy reading about the other DEs changes as well tho!

mnmalst , (edited )

Looks great, I used the wallpaper myself for a while. What theme/icons do you use?

Here is mine: iili.io/JdPVmdb.png

mnmalst ,

To be honest, one of the reasons I switched from KDE (after 15+ years of using it) was the better X support on xfce. I use an nvidia card, so before I switch to wayland support for nvidia drivers has to be much much better.

mnmalst ,

That’s a good reason indeed. I have three monitors myself but all the same refresh rate so it’s all good on that end.

mnmalst ,

I have some left, message me if you still need one.
